I'm planning on swapping mine out as well. The stock pups simply sound weak. There's no meat on them! No a$$!
In the process of upgrading my 55-01. Once that's done, my 55-60 will be next.
He said maybe like 3 months.....although I don't know. I'm kind of considering a Wilkins refin. I mean I know Coral is good color for Pino, and if it's good enough for Pino blah blah blah, but seriously not my color!
Side note: Carl was ecstatic about the fact that this had a non-stamped bridge. I guess they're pretty rare. Just wasn't expecting that kind of enthusiasm over that part of the bass.
I feel you on the "not being your color" piece, but that's a pretty sweet color and a very unique piece. Just saying...
Took some effort to find that bridge. Non-stamped just means it's from the early EARLY days. My #11 has the same bridge.
Ok. Ok. You guys are right. I can be man enough to wear the pink. Might as well embrace it and go with the matching headstock too!
I would be curious to know the orgin of how that bass came to be. Carl was like "Where did the original Lakland neck go??"
Normally I would say paint it, but... given what it is, I agree. And if Carl is making the neck, it's going to be nothing but goodness.
Markus wanted a P (not a P/J). He had a coral body made by Lakland and transplanted all the necessaries. I had won a neo punch P pup (LOG giveaway) and nabbed the bridge off eBay. It was too easy to put a bass together with a Warmoth neck (fit like a glove). Had to buy some screws, knobs, and Straploks though.

Very cool. Yes, this will be a bit of an experiment for me as well. My first bass ever 16 years ago was a samick P with a duncan pickup I put in there. Since then I've had a bass equipped with EMG pj pickups which were very "un-P" like. For a short bit I had a Mike Lull P bass with 2 of his T-bird pickups. Something about that bass just made it a complete pile of mud that didn't sit well with me. Well I do want a warmer, rounder sound than the couple of more aggressive sounding basses I own, I'm hoping that the Neo punch pickups will help retain a little edge while still being "P" like.
It'll be nice to own a classic looking bass again. It's been a while, and while my basses with figured wood tops sure are beautiful, there really is nothing like a familiar looking bass in a familiar looking color that plays better than all the other familiar looking basses in familiar colors! If I haven't mentioned it yet, I'm super excited for cream binding and birdseye dots. 'Gonna look cool.

The 55-01 Spalt was delivered today. I'm very happy with it. The top is subtle yet striking with almost pink hues depending on the angle. The rosewood fretboard has beautiful grain. Here is the odd thing, the neck finish is closer to an American neck than the previous 55-01 I bought last year. The neck is not as thick either. I'm not sure what changed at the factory, but the neck pocket is tighter, and the overall finished product is better than the last 55-01. It seems that the Quality department at Lakland has improved in many ways, I can say that with confidence because I do Quality Control for a living!
