The 55-01 Spalt was delivered today. I'm very happy with it. The top is subtle yet striking with almost pink hues depending on the angle. The rosewood fretboard has beautiful grain. Here is the odd thing, the neck finish is closer to an American neck than the previous 55-01 I bought last year. The neck is not as thick either. I'm not sure what changed at the factory, but the neck pocket is tighter, and the overall finished product is better than the last 55-01. It seems that the Quality department at Lakland has improved in many ways, I can say that with confidence because I do Quality Control for a living! My replacement pickups arrived today. The preamp is on back order. 1 to 2 weeks before it arrives.

I played it and may not change to pups and pre. It sounds great through the Genz/Bergantino setup. If I do the preamp swap, I'm really leaning towards the Aggie OBP-3. I've actually made a spreadsheet of preamp bass, mid and treble dB boost and frequencies controlled. I'm waiting on Bo from Lakland to send those for the LH3 and I'll have my research will be complete.

My 2 Skylines... have a USA 44-60 being built as well... Had to sell just about all of my other gear, but totally worth it in the long run... Only reason I got the SKylines was that my deployment got extended haha

I've got the same 44-64 with flats and Duncan Antiquities. It nails that Motown/Stax sound.

Very cool. Yes, this will be a bit of an experiment for me as well. My first bass ever 16 years ago was a samick P with a duncan pickup I put in there. Since then I've had a bass equipped with EMG pj pickups which were very "un-P" like. For a short bit I had a Mike Lull P bass with 2 of his T-bird pickups. Something about that bass just made it a complete pile of mud that didn't sit well with me. Well I do want a warmer, rounder sound than the couple of more aggressive sounding basses I own, I'm hoping that the Neo punch pickups will help retain a little edge while still being "P" like.

Given how particular you are about your 'P' sound, I'm interested to hear the results of your experiment.

However, it seems you're not keeping up the flooding speed) it wasn't even easy to find this thread in the forum.
here's my obligatory Lakie pic. It's a #331, must be from 1998. Great bass! I hear basses from that time may have finish issues - well, this is not the case, this one's shining like new. Sounds great too, very sense and compressed.

Since the only difference is the addition of a laminate top, there is no logical reason to believe they will sound any different.

If we were still on the old forum software we would have been at #70 and only a couple hundred away from #71, but yes things have slowed... a little. Lovely bass, I have seen a couple from that era with a checked finish, but glad yours is still shiny

Mmm, I wasn't meaning the sound difference all that much (BTW given there are Classics and Standards, the top is not present on every 94). In fact I meant all those tiny details and meticulous attention that, you know, make the difference between US and import Laklands. I once had a Skyline customized by Carl Pedigo, including a tung oil soak of the neck and a bone nut - even that one wasn't quite there.

Well, i havent seen one yet, but it should be made in the same shop with the same quality as a 5594 AFAIK

Today I A/B-ed several Skyline models to my Dingwall ABZ and this particular 44-02 really surprised me. It was really up there in terms of playability and sound. Lakland has definitely gained my respect. No wonder why you guys like your basses so much
