That's a very common misconception about 44/55-02 bridge pickup. Rear coil is NOT in the 70s position and front coil is NOT in the 60s position, so it can't emulate 60s AND 70s Jazz Bass.
The rear coild is more or less in the 60s position, and front coild is closer to the neck to emulate the Stingray sound.

I did this a number of years ago. I did not take into account he 34"/35" scale variables but did try to line up frets/neck position to see how it aligns with 70's Jazz spacing. Not scientific at all but helped me.
As has been stated, the MM coils are not 60's/70's spacing. My ear prefers the rear coil position over the front coil position for most J bass sounding pickup configuration.

Hey everybody, I just picked up a 44-01 that's 'visually' modified (block stickers on the maple board and new knobs) for a decent price and I'm reading through any post I can find about them.
Every post I've seen about the 44-0 is from someone talking about the upgrade choices they made...I don't want to fall into 'modification fever' with this bass, as I am wont to do, and I am hoping there are some people who would like to chime in who are happy with their stock 44–01...? Are y'all out there?
Sound clips too(?) if anybody has found one they want to show off

It's historically been the platform for mods. As the least expensive model.
I can tell you from experience that the pickups are "just ok" for my taste. You can find better sounding soap bars. But the preamp is the thing that most people want to change.
You may find the stock instrument to your liking. I did not. As always, YMMV.

Yes, that is exactly it! I changed both pups and pre in mine. It was good before the mods, but now it is exceptional. I know that's not what you are looking for, but that's the case for many 44-01's.
Couldn't you just email lakland about your bass? They answered some detailed questions about a used skyline I have.
As far as I can remember the USA ones always had the graphite reinforcement. They certainly had them in the early 2000's so for sure had them in 2008.

Posted in the Bergantino thread as well, but I played a gig Saturday after a LONG time off, my '99 55-94 was a joy to play and sounded great (and didn't kill my shoulder < 9lbs). Got down to the low C and it sounded (and felt) great.

I got a 44-01 today and I have to say, I'm really surprised at Chicago Music Exchange. The Ad on Reverb called the below "blocks"...
...and being my first Lakland, I bit. Wasn't until a fellow TBer pointed it out that I realized that you can see the dots through the stickers. I dug the look, and it was already purchased, so I decided to wait and see…
Well, it showed up today and it turns out that the supposed "blocks" looked like A$$, and a couple even had corners coming up! I spent two hours before plugging it in finger-nail-ing and scrubbing with lemon oil to get those stickers off, and now...
You can see in the photo that I left some sticker scraps of fret 19 & 21
The knobs look pretty great though \_(",)_/

@Jon Draffan -- no wrong answer, of course, but has the CME experience tainted the purchase? If it did, what's the return policy because you did purchase a bass with block markers. Perhaps block vs dot markers aren't a big deal to you, if so then I would give the bass a "clean slate" (within the return window) and see where it goes. You might like it considering it is your first Lakland.

It did absolutely taint the purchase. I looked again and this is the ad:
I'm a sucker for blocks. I secured a loan and bought the bass because of the blocks. I feel hoodwinked by this ad/sale. Chicago Music exchange has a good reputation and I'm guessing this is the result of mistakes not habits.
But... Not only do the killer knobs pop out now that the blocks are gone
...but it also sounds incredible through that little Double 4 I'm using right now. The stock MK1 setup has got the force of a G&L or something. Maybe a tiny amp with big-watts is the MK1 solution...? Anyway, I did complain to CME and I am happy with this bass. Thanks y'all
If I felt that the purchase was tainted as you do, I would probably return it because knowing myself, I would probably think about that experience more than I should, which would take away from enjoying the bass. There are other Laklands with blocks standard (like the DJ 4 or 5), so maybe return/trade for another bass at CME; maybe they could offer some sort of discount for getting this wrong. I wish you the best in whatever you decide.
