You'd be right on both counts. I had a tech install USA Bartolini MK pickups, a P in the neck and a dual coil in the bridge. The switch splits the dual coil to the neck coil only. I had a Noll preamp installed and the thing sounds fantastic. The single coil is a little weak so useable choices are P, a P heavy PJ, and a dual coil that with some EQing can get a tiny bit into stingray territory.
I wanted to record some sound samples but I'm having trouble getting my interface working.
I highly recommend this to anyone. A used 44-01, Bartolini USA MK(your choice of pickup pattern), Preamp, and install cost me under $1600.. and it is easily the best sounding bass I've owned in over 30 years of playing!
