If you want identical, only way is to go through Lakland. They buy in bulk and they are not available for retail. They used a different kind of knob up to around 10 years ago (showed on Fred's picture above), but they couldn't find that anymore and had to switch.

ESP makes two lines for the Japanese market. The Shoreline series is made in the ESP factory in Japan and are top notch. The specs are closer to the USA line. They are also VERY expensive. Like USA Lakland expensive. They also make the Skyline Japan line as a cheaper alternative. They are not made in Korea they are made in China and are very budget. The electronics are all lower quality and they don't use the same hardware. I am sure they are super nice for the price but I would think the Skylines would be a step up. I view the lineup like this USA Lakland > Shoreline > Skyline > Skyline Japan

If I couldn't put my hands on it I would opt for a standard Skyline unless the price on the KL model was REALLY good. There is a lot of misinformation about the Skyline Japan series on Talkbass where people insist that they are not made in China. I am sure its quality but having never played one I would opt for the product that is known to be great. If it was super cheap I would give it a shot but if its the same price as a used Skyline I would go that way instead.

Thanks,for all the input on the KL serial number Lakland Skyline,also found out from seller it has Fishman preamp. It is a nice looking Skyline,but price seems up there with the same as the other Lakland Skylines. I know I could change the pickups,and preamp,but not very good a swapping electronics. I already have a 44-02 Skyline with Bartiloni pickups. One I am looking at is quilted Cherry Burst,real tempting.

How could you tell which ones are made in Japan,or China?

Hardware on this one is the same as all the Lakland Skyline just like the one I already have. Might be an optical illusion,but looks like it has the wheel style truss rod adjustment?

The hardware looks the same but is not manufactured in the same place as the others. Maybe the hipshot licensed tuners are the same. The electronics are all different. They do have truss wheels. I am not sure anything about the necks is the same as far as profile and such. People had said they are pretty nice but with the prices being similar to the Indo/Korean Skylines which we all know are great, I just don't see the point in gambling.

Hey Johnny, where did you get this info? Somewhere in the internets, I think on Facebook, Steve Pirruccello said he thought they were made in China and it became the truth. But that was not confirmed. I did some research a while ago and the information is conflicting. Some Japanese dealer websites mention they are made in Korea. There was no mention of them being made in China.

I’ve seen that error before… people see the “Fishman” name on the battery door and assume it’s a Fishman pre. It’s not. If you’re curious on how it sounds, there is a demo here:

I confirmed it with ESP awhile back when I was interested in what they are about. I don't think its hard information to get or some hidden secret. ESP is not open about where their stuff is made on their website or on the instruments but they will tell you if you ask. The contact is on the website.

There is no mention of the Shoreline series being made in Japan either.
