Active/passive, 3 band, boost/cut, smoth neck, coil tap, barts for $800 used, you can't beat it.

Got mine for $700, beat ya

But yeah, I love the barts as well. Strung up with some slickrounds it has an awesome vintage/smooth thump.

Have owned a Hollowbody, a 55-02, a JO5, and a Glaub with a Jazz neck and Darkstar.

Still have the JO5 and Glaub. The Hollowbody was wonderful but didn't get used as much as needed. I didn't like the Barts on the 55-02...

The JO5 and Glaub are absolutely wonderful basses - fit, finish, feel. Plus I live close, and Carl, Brian and Dan are ace guys.

I wanted something really versatile, and a 55-94 fit the bill. It wasn't aggressive-sounding enough for me.

I went to a Dingwall. Every kind of awesome in a single bass.

I used to own a Lakland 55-01, and these were the things I liked about it and the reasons I traded it away:

Likes:

• Tight, clear B-string
• Quality woods
• Excellent neck! Nice and shallow so it's easy to reach all of the notes, even though the string spacing is 19mm
• 19mm string spacing so my fingers don't feel cramped
• Quality hardware
• I like the little frets

Dislikes:

• It weighed 10.5 lbs!
• The sunburst was not good. The colors were stark and not blended well, so that it looked like a three-tone bass - not a sunburst.
• Didn't like the preamp

I recently sold a Peavey Millennium Plus 5 because I couldn't get into the MM pickup tone and happened to look at the TB classifieds. I saw my current 55-01 being sold new (plastic still on the pickups!) for $625 shipped. I know you didn't want pics but the appearance of this one made me try a 55-01 again:

This one weighs 8.5 lbs! I plan on replacing the preamp with an Audere 3ZB near the end of summer and replacing the pickups with USA Barts shortly afterward. The build quality is spectacular and after these mods I would confidently put it up against anything else! I'm very happy to be a Lakland man again.

To be honest, I was buying my 55-01 as a backup and time filler while I was going to get a custom. It was on MF for a steal on the blemished line. I had always heard good things about them and one of my main influences (Rodney "Skeet" Curtis) plays a 55-94. Once I got it, I liked it so much I just stuck with it and said forget the custom.

I was looking for a good quality first 5 string and saw a 55-01 advertised that was about 40 miles away so I went to check it out and fell in love with it straight away. It was the first time that a 5 string instrument made sense in my hands. I played it for about six months before getting a 55-02 and 44-02 and then I sold it and bought a DJ4 so that I had a good passive Jazz that I had always wanted and had never been able to find. As good as the 55 and 44 are unbelievably good basses, my DJ4 is something else, it has Aeros and is an '03 model. I got it from a guy that plays in a busy U2 tribute band and the it is played in so nicely that from day one it felt like it had always been mine. The cherry on the cake with all this is that I got it at a great price with a Gator hard case and Levy's strap with schallers from a really nice guy who wanted it to go to a good home. I removed the original white PG and popped a red tort Jeannie's one on there.

I have just ordered another DJ4 from BC as back up (honestly, honey I need another spare bass!) I just hope the new breed of pups is as good as the Aeros.

My 55-02 fretless came to me in a rather strange way,...was working in a music store, got the bass in,..fell in LOVE with it! But of course, since I was working in a music store, I definitely couldn't afford it. One day, a kid came in, wanting to buy a bass to learn on. I demo'd every bass we had, and finally picked up the 55-02, simply because I loved playing it. He fell in love with the sound, I told both him and his mother that this was NOT the bass for him to learn on, let me order him a fretted version instead. They wouldn't listen, out came the charge card, one beautiful 55-02 fretless leaves the building. Several months later, I'm cruising ebay, what do I find? The kid has the bass up for sale, I'm still broke, but email him anyway. It doesn't sell on ebay, I wind up trading him a yamaha acoustic guitar, an fx processor and installing a pickup in the yamaha. The moral to the story,... I have no idea,....all I know is, I tried to steer him in the right direction, they wouldn't listen,... I wound up with a bass that I love! The end.

My drummer / soundman confirmed it last night. I played the setup in my signature and he said its the best I ever sounded. I agreed with him. Lakland and Lull are the .... My gas is cured.
