Laptop crashed...

I'm posting this from a school computer. My laptop crashed on me on Tuesday night. I brought it into the school IT dept. and they said the hard drive is on it's way out. I called up the manufacturer and it's out of warranty

My roommate said his uncle runs a computer repair service, so maybe I can go that route. I just hope I can recover everything from the HD. I don't have the Windows XP recovery discs.

How exactly did it crash? Did you get a BSOD (blue screen of death), is it just rebooting over and over again, is it not booting at all?

Most importantly, what were you doing when it crashed?...
