Laser Beam Dispertion

I have a Line 6 combo with a 15", and while it sounds great, I finally experienced the aforementioned; I tought I was loud as crap on the stage, and when I heard the recording, I almost couldn't be heard in the public. Now, some time ago, I saw something, aimed a guitarists though, that you would put in front of the speaker and it would reduce Laser Beam. Or Comb Filtering, I'm not sure (I do know what Comb Filtering is). However, I need a way to at least reduce the laser beam, because I can't afford another amp right now in this moment.

If there is a product that helps, or a mod, I'd be grateful.

There is, a midrange driver. Dispersion is inversely proportional to the width of the source. That's why midrange drivers are smaller than woofers, and tweeters smaller than midranges. Your best alternative is to add a midrange driver, along the lines of that in the fEarful DIY thread.

What was the recording from? And where were you playing? Was there a soundguy? Details, details...
 
... and having suffered through various guitarists' excrutiating beaming, I can't understand why all guitar cabs/combos aren't stuffed with multiple 6" drivers, instead of one or two or four twelves...

Because most guitar players haven't a whit of acoustical engineering knowledge and buy their gear based on whether it 'looks right'. Not that any bass player would ever do that. :eyebrow:
 
You may be referring to a Webber Beam Blocker. Lot's of folks use them on guitar speakers. I'm not sure about bass speakers. Fairly cheap and easy mod, if they'll work for bass.

AFAIK, Comb filtering comes from multiple speakers. If your combo has a single 15" speaker, then comb filtering isn't your issue.

I most definetly know what comb filtering is; I had just mentioned it because I didn't know if the mod I wanted to find would remedy that or laser beam. About your second question however, my sound I find is pretty balanced, although a little on the rough side. I mean, it has a lot of midrange and treble, but also has some mellow bass. Obviously, it's not very bassy, otherwise it wouldn't have much definition.

The recording was from a digital camera, so it wasn't anything professional, but I've have heard myself in this camera other times, and those times I was either in the direct path of the speaker, or very close. Since this was from far away, laser beam kicked in. I was playing in a college theater, and the soundguy was there only for the vocals.

Now this caught my attention. How would this go around? Would I replace the existing 15", or add the driver? My amp has a tweeter, by the way.

I think your problem is that you are expecting a 15" combo amp to fill an auditorium.

I don't care how loud you were on stage, it is not going to fill a big room like that when you only have vocals in the PA
 
Beam blockers are to disperse frequencies that emanate from cone breakup beaming this is at about 1.5k in a 15".
What you require is something to improve efficiency and dispersion within your bandwidth, Ergo simply attach the following to your combo's
speaker:

You wouldn't want to go off all half cocked now would you?, Should you find it difficult to obtain a pre used model, Bill Fitzmaurice will no doubt furnish you the appropriate measurements to build your own, for a small
consideration.

Pardon me, I think you've mistunderstood me. I wasn't planning on filling the room, I wa splanning on at least hearing myself along with the guitars on the back. If everything could be heard clearly on the back except the bass, I'd say it's because of laser beam dispersion. Apart from the fact that I have a very hi-mid tone, not a very bassy one, so I definetly wasn't expecting my amp to fill.

You would add the crossover/6" either in addition to or likely better, in place of the tweeter if there's room enough in the baffle to fit it. Otherwise may have to put it in it's own little separate box to sit on top of the amp.

No.........I think it is you that does not understand.

"filling a room" does not mean you are going to be boomy and overbearing.

It simply means that you can be heard in the mix throughout the entire room.

If the auditorium does not have good acoustics, you are not going to do it with a single speaker combo amp - PERIOD

Exactly, you need two to three times the sound to be heard against a guitar. You are asking a single 15" combo to do it? If you sound "blended" where you stand, the middle to back of the room won't hear you. ;)
 
I built a separate box, using an Eminence 6.5" sealed back midrange and their 800 Hz passive x-over board. It's really easy because the box doesn't have to function acoustically, and it doesn't have to be particularly heavy duty. So I simply tossed some scrap 1/2" plywood together.

Going forward, I am on the fence right now about whether to incorporate the 6" into my 12" box, or downsize to a 10. Decisions, decisions. In any event, I can't do anything until my garage gets above 40 degrees. Winter is for planning, summer for building.

I know what he's getting at now. However, my guitarist both use solid state amps, at a not so high volume considering that I could be heard extremely much louder than them on the stage. However, the point you guys bring up still remains even though laser beam was a factor there. Of course, I need a bigger amp and speakers, which is what I'm saving for.

I was looking to actually get some BFM cabs, but noticing how Billfitzmaurice was here, I didn't want to make it seem like I was patronizing him. For now, I needed a mod, but seeing as how that is impossible, I guess my best bet is to keep waiting.

I don't know if it will work for you or not, but it only cost a couple of bucks to make one and give it try.

If I remember right, I think consensus is that they do work, but they work by reducing mid frequencies, taking away the laserbeam but also making your overall rig quieter.
