Cool. I gigged an older Fodera Emperor 5 for a couple of years and used it with my LMII. No problem with either cutting through live.

Hey if you like it, you like it, but when I listen to that Richard Bona clip, I hear very little low end. It's clear and articulate, but to my ears, kinda weak under 200hz.

Here's a video of Pieces Of A Dream at that same venue. Looks like David Dyson is using the same rig. I'm guessing it sounded good out front. I do recall getting compliments so I'm not too worried about it. I sent him a message asking if he used that same rig and how did he like it.

From this clip its hard to tell. I'm listening through decent headphones and the bass is far enough down in the mix that I have to concentrate really hard to follow it let alone think about its tone. There are a few spots were its buried enough that you can't really decipher it or hear it. So in this case it's not sitting "in" the mix at all.

I wouldn't judge anything by a youtube clip, Jaco, music, a piece of gear. It's the same reason I prefer listening to CDs or LPs to youtube. Same with Wikipedia, lots of wrong info out there.

There are a few spots were its buried enough that you can't really decipher it or hear it. So in this case it's not sitting "in" the mix at all.

We had it going thought our house system with subs. Good playing, the rest of the band sounded good. Bass drum kickin' through solid. Bass guitar was kinda weak in the mix here.

What are you listening on? I've tried a decent set of earbuds, a bluetooth speaker and just tried it on a tv soundbar/sub setup. None of them sounded the least bit weak... they sounded like Bona. Same tone I've heard in the mix from him with no problems cutting through. It's even across the spectrum which is why I don't get the weak under 200hz thing. Maybe you think he's after something he isn't.

The kick is overpowering the mix. Sadly, that's typical.

Foderas can get quite bassy, the Fodera users who play with little low end do so by choice.

What I'm saying is he has something I'd never be after. I don't want even across the spectrum. If others do, that's fine by me, but if my opinion is solicited, I'll call it as I hear it.

For this kind of music yes. In a way it's about how it sounds rather than how prominent it is in the mix in this case. Some dynamics processing might in order because it kinda jumps up and down a little.

So I pretty much sabotaged my own sound. I didn't touch the drive knob though. I wonder why they designed the amp that way?! Good thing I didn't have any 'slap' tunes on the setlist that night.

You'll figure a similar design scheme with some ampeg amps and preamps.

For example preamp SVP pro and preamp of SVT II pro.
The more you dig in sound with the drive knob then the more low end rolls off and simultaneously you'll notice emphasis to the mids.
They do it to tighten total sound performance once some dirty sound was added.

IMO there is lots of sound below 200Hz FOH while the bass guitar is weak. As I told already above there was likely lots of bass sound coming off from the stage thus there was no need to have more of it in in the main mix, which is actually the sound you are listening on the vid.

Basically my point. A player's tonal choices don't define the gear he (or she) is using.

Could just be the angle but the speakers in that cab in the OP look like they have seen significant over excursion. Looks like creased cones, particularly the upper left.

The standard preamp for quite a while has been the Pope. Many people upgrade their older Foderas with them and Duncan pickups. I can easily get that sound and more with my '92 which came with Lane Poors and Hazlabs preamp.

It's easy to come away with the idea that Foderas sound like Bona, Garrison, Gwizdala, etc. Many of them can but much like a Fender Jazz, they can sound like Jaco but aren't limited to that. Anthony Jackson has a completely different vibe.

Damn true. Choose 10 bassists and make them play on the exact same rig. Guess what, they'll all sound different!
