The homer in me needs to throw two local bands into the mix

The Cars - gave the New Wave a little twist and kept it going plus some great songs that stand the test of time. Plus Ric Ocasek helped keep the musician-model couple thing going with Paulina Porzikova.

J. Geils Band - these guys at least have been nominated a couple of times. They were one of, if not the first, rock concerts that I went to. I saw them in the 70's at the Springfield (Mass) Civic Center and Tom Petty was the warmup band. Peter Wolf's intro rap on Musta Got Lost is Hall-worthy in itself "whats the name of the chick with the long hair? "let down your hair and let me climb up the ladder of your love..." He also did his part for the musician-actress couple thing - Faye Dunaway.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame can stick it all up its collective a$$es, in my opinion. Not having Rush in the Hall after 35+ years of stellar musicianship is a travesty. Dave Clark 5? They couldn't hold Alex, Geddy, and Neil's jockstraps! As they say in NYC, fuggedabouditt!

"Businessman Hall of Fame"? Sure. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? I'd hope not.

Why not? Sure would be interesting to hear why you think so - given their 30+ year career, massive fan base and notable influence over artists from Garth Brooks to Lenny Kravitz.

I would be willing to bet any amount of money that someone you personally love as an artist lists KISS as a prime reason for picking up a guitar or bass in the first place. Their impact on pop culture is unmatched.

Don't let your subjective taste get in the way of this. They clearly deserve to be in a Rock n Roll HOF and to suggest otherwise is just goofy.

In my opinion, based on the body of work and level of influence.... Alice Cooper, Rush and KISS are in a class by themselves for being screwed by this absolute joke of an institution.

Anyone can get in, rock or not, if someone donates enough $$ to the Hall's foundation. Don't suck up to them, and you don't get in. It's that simple.

Wow, pretty comprehensive list B-Note. I'm not sure I'd like to see all of them but there are plenty of artists worth remembering and honoring on that list.

SRV is actually eligible for the first time next year so it will be interesting to see how he does.

I also noted Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon were inducted as
'early influences', along with Robert Johnson. Glaringly missing
was Sun House and Chester Burnett (Howlin' Wolf).

You know how you read those Bass Player/Rolling Stone/Blender/Etc magazine "100 best guitarist/bassist/band" articles and they're full of crap?

The HOF is the same thing.

There's plenty that, IMO, don't belong there- and plenty more that do deserve to be in there. Arguments can be made one way or the other for EVERYONE that's ever performed is some way or another.

I "like" KISS, I don't "love" KISS, but I think they were really important for rock and roll in the mid-late 70s.

Similarly, there's absolutely no reason why Rush should not be in the HOF.

What does Johnny Rotten have to say about it?

ah, so it's not a real hall of fame then... it's a beauty contest... and you only really stand a chance if you pay to play their game...

oh well, I suppose a real musician like Walter Trout has no chance then...

Maybe I'll put Genesis in there as my fifth since Lou Reed is in with Velvet Revolver.

The nominating committee has never liked progressive rock nor the big 80's AOR bands. Genesis has been eligible for since 1993 but never nominated. Maybe they are waiting to put them in individually?

This is inexplicable. Between Genesis & Rush alone there have to have been tens of millions of units sold. Throw in Jethro Tull, ELP, King Crimson, and Yes and you've got enough records moved to finance an entire third world continent! And it's not like any of those bands I just mentioned are "obscure" or "marginalized", those are the guys who were getting tons of FM airplay back when airplay actually meant something.

I place the rock and roll hall of fame right up there with the oscars and the emmys and the golden globe glamfests...it's all subjective crap and doesn't really matter - it's a popularity contest.

personally, I'd rather go to the Hard Rock Cafe' and look at guitars and stuff...

Putting Madonna in the hall doesn't make her crap any more tolerable to me; it's no better or worse than if Pink Floyd were omitted.

Music is strange. It was made to be shared and enjoyed by the multitudes, however, it is probably most rewarding when enjoyed by yourself.

I think Genesis should be in there. They are a highly influencial progressive rock band and they also managed to sell quite a few albums and have a couple hit singles after the seventies. Not to mention that they had two legendary vocalists in Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins.

This reminds me of that South Park episode when everyone's on Ritalin and they are enjoying the hell outta some Phil Collins
