Layoffs? LAYOFFS?!?!

yep, heard of "Staycations" myself. Unfortunately we're definately a resort hotel, not one that caters to business treavellers, so if all those folk in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and NYC decide to stay home instead of going to the Jersey Shore this summer, we're going to be hurting big-time. I suspect we won't be hiring a lot of extra support staff for the busy months, and hours are going to be cut back - at least as much as they can be cut back, when it simply takes a certain amount of time to properly clean a room - and if you spend less time per room, it means those rooms simply won't be cleaned as well as they would be if you had that extra 10 minutes or so...Sigh. Between the rock and the hard spot, for sure.

I have been laid off by four different companies since 2003....That's the curse of Telecommunications...an sector I thought would be strong forever...so much for that...

Working as a contractor now with no benefits...paying the bills, but thats about it...

my boss and I are out of work.

We have two big projects "on hold". Maybe they'll start up again in the spring.
Or maybe I'll just call it good and retire. Too dang old to be working masonry anyway.
It's not like I need the money.

I haven't worked for 3 months....I know have lots of time to play and get my bands to play out more......but I think every other laid off person has the same idea so I am finding tons of competition for bar gig slots......

I got laid off last month, and honestly (so far) it's the best thing that could've happened. I was sick of my job, I wanted to go back to school and do something with my life but I had some things that were holding me back. After catching a few lucky breaks, I took care of the things that were holding me back from going to school and it looks like I'll be starting school in April. There isn't really jack for full time jobs around the area but there's a bunch of part time jobs available so it shouldn't be too hard to get a job when I start school. But I knew I was on the chopping block when layoffs came around. My job messed my shoulders up bad, had to have surgery on one, so they knocked me off of the machine I was working on when I got released from my restrictions (should've been done BEFORE I even had the surgery since that was the 5th shoulder injury). And after that they were having me train people on the machines I knew how to run, got a pay cut and 2 months later I was done. Sucks that I'm out of a job, but good since I'm getting my life on the right path now.

We laid off two guys in our shop two weeks ago, and last week the rest of us got our hours cut from 40 to 32. So now I work a four day work week. I'm sure more layoffs or hours cuts will be coming soon.

Fortunately I have a well equipped shop at home and enough sidework to keep the family fed and the bills paid....... for now.

Recent college graduate with 3-5 years experience in apparently nothing that pays the bills. I'm adding 24 credit hours worth of accounting classes to my degree, so hopefully I can get a job in accounting within a year. I have temporary work for now and can bunk with my parents, but that can't last forever.

You guys are still eating, so I'm still working. OTOH, the
firm is facing a difficult year and there is belt tightening
all around. They haven't laid off yet and when you are a
straight commission sales guy, every dollar you produce is a
positive event for the company as well as yourself.

When the sales guys get let go, kiss your company goodbye.

i was laid off last month. even the university systems are hurting. i worked for the university of maryland school of medicine doing clinical vaccine trials...the entire school of medicine is on a hiring freeze, lots of furlough days for people.
not only was i laid off, but i can't find a job
i guess the good thing to come out of this is that i am going back to school full time

I'm straight commission too, I've seen one paycheck (and that one was meager) in the last ten weeks. I wish I'd get laid off, I'd make waaaay mor money off unemployment and go back to college.

Funny thing is, my boss just hired two new guys :hmm: I have no idea why she thought it was a good idea to invest in training them, and frankly I need the competition for sales about as much as I need a swift kick in the balls.

Anybody thinking of moving to another country? I saw on PBS last night that the Polish economy is booming, and the cost of living is astonishingly cheap. I might even have some long lost faimly there yet.

I might be posting from Warsaw soon. Anybody know what the instrument market is like there? :p
