Layoffs? LAYOFFS?!?!

I've been out of work since May 15, 2008. The research grant for the project I worked on didn't get renewed.

I sold just about all my music gear to move stateside from Hawaii. My nephew and I drove cross country from Seattle, WA to Salem, MA. I had some job pospects lined up, but the economy took a nose dive shortly after we arrived. We made our way to Grand Forks, ND to stay with some of his friends (UND students). I ended up returning to Hawaii, while my nephew and my car stayed in Grand Forks.

I'm in the running for some Federal bioscience positions (USDA), here in Hawaii and on the mainland. I should know in the next few weeks if I got one of them.

I looked for a career in electrical power engineering for about 6months, I finally was hired on with a steel manufacturer that has a mill here and was laid off before I even started after canceling one interview and respectfully declining another.

Good times! Times like these really put a fire under your butt to "keep on keepin' on".

/going back to school to wait out the crappy wages and crappier economy

I got laid off Jan. 20th, but I knew it was coming. Kinda how construction goes.
Hang in there people, it'll all get better. May take a few years for the market to correct itself after our government stops throwing money into the fire.

We went though a 1 day a week un-paid day off. If you can afford the pay cut, it is actually really nice to have a 3 day weekend every week!

If they go to a four day week, I think I can pick up some Thursday night gigs to make up some of the difference. I could be on my way to becoming a professional musician. :scowl:

I have actually been working more in the last few months than I had in the previous quarter before that. We've seen some low seniority guys get their hours cut and their positions bumped back, but it also helps that the new undercutting competitor in our field just officially went under last week.

I'm hoping I can ride out my current position and pay rate until the storm is over.
