LDS Sealed 15/8

The amount of xmax has less to do with it than the end Q of the system after stuffing combined with the driver Q, would be my guess.

You might also like the sound of woofers overdriving just a little but I'm guessing it's more the character of the lows/upper bass/low mids you're hearing, which is more to do with Q than Xmax.

+1 I bet he would like definimax if it was in smaller box.
It has low Q even in the cab as small as 1.7 cu ft, while delta lfa has more than 2.5 db bump above 100 hz.

I guess I was just looking for the difference from the 3015 to be explained to me in "real-world" terms. Sadly, I lack the skill set necessary to translate T/S specs into what the performance actually will be. Again, I apologize for the hijack, but, seeing as I like sealed, and eminence makes KILLER speakers, this has be greatly intrigued.

...I probably just need a pair of 8 ohm thunderchild TC115 cabs, if they ever come out.

If the 8-ohm TC115 comes out, it will very likely use the stock Kappalite 3015 (non-LF) rather than a custom Kappalite.

Good to know Duke! Maybe it would bring the cost down alittle and be very efficient.

The woofer chamber in the current cab is 46 liters. The 4015lf actually would have performed the same but louder in about a 30 liter box. The 3015lf works well in a 54 liter but with almost no low mid bump. I really want to give that one another shot. One sealed cab idea would be to run the 3015 lf up to about 800hz and then in another sealed compartment over top of it (about 30 liters) you could run a deltalite 2512 full range. Maybe smooth it out and cross over to a tweet. Good, loud, 4 ohm cab.

Hey Duke, if you used the stock 3015, couldn't you use a larger flatter sounding high frequency driver like the eminence psd:2002? That looks fairly flat from around 2khz on up. Probably would need much less of a crossover network than the thunderchild 112. Maybe low pass it at around 8khz too.

Small decrease in cost, but less than 1/2 dB increase in efficiency over the custom 4-ohm Kappalite 15 I'm using.

If you're talking about running the 2512 and 3015LF in parallel up to 800 Hz or so, the 2512 would be the limiting factor, wasting a lot of the 3015LF's capabilities. If you're planning to cross over from the 3015LF to the 2512 at 800 Hz or so, then it would be an 8-ohm cab instead of a 4-ohm cab. I just don't think those two would be a real good combination.

I'd probably go with the same driver I'm using in the 4-ohm Thunderchild 115, which is Celestion CDX1-1731. Since I'm playing the lightweight game, I think the higher compression driver cost is worth it to save four pounds in weight. Also, while it's possible that the PSD2002 would result in a simpler crossover topology, I wouldn't expect it. The published curves for compression drivers mean almost nothing, because it's the curves on the horn that I'll be using that matter. The published curves give me some idea of a compression driver's bandwidth, but that's about it, and a plane wave tube curve is a lot more useful for that purpose.

I stuffed a kappalite 3015lf into my cab last night and used some extra matress foam for stuffing. It sounded pretty good and if I crossed it up around 1khz, it added some growl to the sound. It is pretty close to the sound I like with a mid range added in but not exact. That last little bit seems to be the sound the 10's have. You really can get different size drivers to sound very close with careful tuning but, the size just effects the sound and feel slightly. So anyway, the 3015lf sounds pretty good sealed just like the specs and winisd says.

Oh, I hear ya. I don't care if it's not correct. Even Jim bergantino says that after different size drivers in different cabs are tuned to sound the same, "a 10 still sounds like a 10 and a 12 still sound like a 12". They do have some character differences. I've noticed alot of guys are selling there fearful cabs on here lately. If you really could make them sound like some conventional cabs with just eq and od then they would have done it and stayed with a very light, loud, powerful cab. A dog can't be a cow. :smug: I've got big shoulders, I can take it.

+1

Hey Duke, I know that it's been said, that if you put out a speaker there will always be people pointing out how to change it. In that spirit I would like to suggest, if you use the stock 3015, maybe you could put out a 2x15/horn version. I can't see that one not just killing everything else out there.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I would not enjoy building and shipping such a big box. Right now I enjoy the size boxes I'm working with, and have a pretty full workload. Not that I don't have a couple of products in development, but nothing that big.

I just popped an eminence CA154 into my 15/8 cab and wow! I really like it! On top of gaining 3ds by going from 8 ohm to 4 ohm, the driver is also about 2db more sensitive to begin with. I have the mid turned all the way up now and it's perfect. I could actually play some of my gigs with this cab now. It has a cleaner sound sound than the delta 15lf but goes louder and lower. Really nice.

I popped a faital pro 6fe200 mid into the cab today. Wide open as well. Sounds great too! This mid makes the cab sound more solid in the mids and ups the power handling. It's not better than the mod8 but definitely different. Probably alot of guys would prefer it as it is more "bass cab" like. I may use this cab at tomorow nights gig. It's one of the those rooms where any volume is too much. I tough load in as well. I need to make a proper baffle to fit this mid into the hole for the mod8.

Looking at the vendor data, that eminence CA154/faital pro 6fe200 does look like a good match. Are you running the CA154 full range and just taking the natural rolloff? With 1.5 cu-ft and only 11 lbs per woofer you might actually be able to do a 4 ohm sealed 1515/66 cab that wouldn't bust your back moving it around.
