I go for note for note. For home practice and training, I like to see what was being played by the original bass player and recreate it. If you are just sluffing over a run or making up your own because you can't play the original, that seems to miss the point of me playing along and learning with the artist and mp3's. I spend time looping with Garage Band to get sections nailed.

If you're playing with a group your own version is fine but more work. Playing like the original recording would be easier to learn for everyone you just need a list of songs, no artistic input needed.

This is what I like about the Blues or Jazz with a band, where you improvise a lot or continuously around a framework, it is always your own version.

I'm a drummer and I've noticed that Neil Peart plays all his drum patterns and parts as if it was played on the record. Rush usually plays their stuff note for note, on some occasions though they will pop out something flashy but not too big.

Every band views its own music differently. That's their thing, and I'd be content to let them have it.

I play what's called for ... in a bar room cover band I don't worry about note for note accuracy. IF the gig is a tribute act, or a wedding/corporate band, then fidelity to the original is much more important, and is expected by the band leader.

When I do covers I always try to play note for note. People want to hear songs the way they are used to hearing them. Unless you are a famous musician nobody wants to hear your interpretation of a song.
I'd have to disagree. We reinterpret a lot of songs that we do, though we do some note for noting as well, and the ones we reinterpret go over very well. I think it depends a lot on the band and the song, though. We reinterpret stuff well ;) and some of the songs we do could use some freshening up.
