This "belt rash" keeps cropping up. It was not a feature in my earlier days. Does it appear on you or the guitar?

On my new Fender jazz I took the sticky transparent shipping protector from a computer monitor and stuck it to the back of the guitar for protection. I keep peeling a bit back to see if there is potential for long term effects (chemical damage) but so far so good.
As regards retirement, I do plan to get a job as long as it's not behind a desk. My last 5 years have been spent behind a desk in my own office. No meetings, just phone, email and drafting. Could go through a week without interacting directly with a human being nevermind sex! I got out out before I killed someone. I actually had a plan to kill the big boss. He is over 6 feet and I am 5 feet 2" but mad as a hatter and know what I'm doing. Best I went. I fancy stacking shelves at night in the equivalent of Walmarkt here.
Beltrash - cream for that..too funny. Good idea on the cling protector - I do watch repair and first thing I do is put a cling over every client's watch crystal - plus has advertising on it.
Yeah, get some low key job, gets you out, puts a little ough in the pcket. And a great feeling knowing that you can tell them to shove it if necessary.
My band is playing a private party tomorrow, and three guests are going to get up and play a few songs. The bassist has to bring his own bass since mine is lefty. I am sure they will be juiced, so no worries for me!
You know I hadn't thought of that before. After 41 years in the public service that was my career and all my trainning was in economics and social policy. I was stuck there. The thought of just being able to resign with the appropriate notice is a novel idea. Such freedom compared to what I am used to.
The first and last time anyone took up my bass uninvited and played it, they managed to snap two strings, and ding the back with their belt buckle. Since then I have a simple rule about my bass guitar: you touch it, I'm going to give you such a relative head-to-ass ratio adjustment you'll be tasting your own behind for a week.
To avoid actually having to do it, I ended up shopping a very cheap Rockwell RB-32 (not a bad bass actually) that is my jack-of-all-places. It's what goes with me on weekends out of town, and it's what I give people to mess with if they want to mess with it. It's also prominently on display in my room, whereas my preciousssssss... (Cort C4H) is actually hung inside a closet.

Oh man . . that really sucks! I couldn't blame anyone who had gone through that (let alone twice!) if they got REALLY possessive about their gear. Just amazing!
The more I read this thread, the more blessed I feel to have played with such a great group of musos over the years. Of course I've seen people damage their own gear through accident, incompetence or blind anger/frustration, but I can honestly say that when I have offered gear to others (usually because of breakdown), it has always been treated well and returned to me as I left it.
The rule of thumb I have taught my kids is that pro's NEVER ask another player to "borrow" their instrument. By all means ask about it and look, and if it's offered to you, treat it with nothing but respect. If you do that, when you are in need, people will help you out with replacement gear usually. Likewise, if some punter asks you, tell them it's your tool of trade and ask them to respect the fact that you would prefer them not to touch it (unless it's someone you want to lend it to of course). But be polite, and answer at least some questions (even dumb ones).
When I was younger and I'd be talking with a bassist with a visiting band and he would ask if I'd like to try his bass I'd jump at the chance. I'd be thinking:" What a cool chap."

Never had a problem, don't have that much of an ego.......but there are some guys out there that there I really don't want anywhere near my basses. People who don't/can't play bass(or any instrument) and think that any form of bass playing is second best/failing to be real musician.

As the OP my experience has been even guitarists think they have to pull (not pluck) the strings much more than they would finger pick. I hate the sound of the strings hitting the frets when they are not even slapping!
If they're sober, any of my band members are welcome to play with my bass. 99% of the time they ask first. I also let other bass players try out my rig when we're out gigging. I enjoy hearing what it sounds like, and hearing other bassists play. Music, to me, is more fun when it's shared, and I've found that almost everyone is very respectful of my gear.
