Leave those necks on!

There are multiple ways to correct a failing screw hole:

fill it with super thin CA and let it soak in for an hour. (Simple non invasive but doesn’t always get the job done.)

Use a toothpick to help screw (kinda sloppy, but eh?)

Replace it with threaded inserts (works great but too invasive for vintage instruments)

Bung it and drill a new hole (proper but most time consuming)

So, yeah I think you are making a tempest in a teacup.

I was wondering - the two necks I unscrewed in my life, I was surprised the screws were not very tightly screwed. Is that normal? I would think that the more I tighten the screw, the better contact. No?

Soundwise, when I put the necks back, there was no difference I could hear. Except for old Ibanez when I put a shim. Then the sound was different, but the action changed so significantly that I wasn't able to tell whether the difference comes from the neck or from fingers that are finally allowed to play naturally.

Still i resent the idea of a toothpick in my 1969 bass... imho it should have been prevented.

Why should it bother you?

If Leo was aiming for heirloom quality craftsmanship, I could understand your complaint.

But he wasn’t. He was making tools, not pieces of art.

Everyone knows the mojo leaks out when a screw gets loosened. But where does it go? This is the part most people fail to understand. If you have all the windows and doors shut tight, the mojo will generally stay in the room. You can sort of feel it sometimes, circling around up near the ceiling, looking for something to attach itself to. Now, the worst thing that can happen at that point is that someone walks in on you and lets the mojo escape from the room. Say your wife comes in while you are working on your bass, to bring you a sandwich or tell you your buddy called from jail to borrow $200 for bail. The mojo will fly right out of the room! Then you have to chase it down the hall. If you're lucky you might still be able to find it, but there are so many ways it can escape from the house that it's unlikely you will ever get it back. This is why there are so many lifeless, lackluster used basses on Ebay all the time - someone loosened a neck screw, the mojo escaped, and the bass was never the same after that, so they sold it on and bought a new one. Of course a new bass only has the factory-installed mojo, not the additional mojo that has built up over time, so a new bass will never sound as good as an old one that has all its original screws intact. Many a bassist has switched to clarinet in despair upon realizing this.

Now the good news: if you have locked the door and windows while performing your truss rod adjustment, and can ignore the pounding from people trying to get your attention, you have a decent chance at being able to recapture the escaped mojo. The procedure is relatively simple: holding the removed screw in your right hand and the bass body in your left hand, stand in the center of the room and repeat this chant three times: "Mojo, mojo, where did you go? Back into your hole you must flow! Hoedown, flowdown, mojo go down!" When you have completed this chant three times, immediately replace the removed screw and tighten. You must do this for each removed screw in order to ensure that the mojo from each screw hole comes back.

That's all there is to it! But please remember that this only works for neck mounting screws. The procedure for calling back escaped mojo after loosening pickguard screws is much more complicated, and not for the faint of heart.

'bout to unscrew all my necks just to rifle a few feathers
my dad (who builds/repairs acoustics) and i were talking a few weeks back re: Gibson vs Fender as how you can tell Leo was an engineer based upon the stratocaster. besides a body that perfectly conforms to optimal playing position for most humans, EVERYTHING comes apart and is a standard size and swappable. break the headstock? put on another neck. drop and shatter the body? put on another body. really the only thing he didn't get right was the headstock angle, but i bet that's where cost efficiency won out
anyway, if they weren't meant to be loosened there'd be a rivet there or it would be a set neck or something
i have enjoyed swapping necks on my various f-style guitars (never got on with the stock neck that came on my jazzmaster but the birdseye mighty mite strat neck was just the ticket. when i wanted to groove fretless a shot on my p bass i just bought a cheap neck and pulled the frets)

I don't blame sellers or owners, just Leo. The technology for inserts/bolts was certainly there, he just didn't want to spend the extra five bucks to put a proper bolt joint on his necks. Nor does anyone else. Hell, you'd think at a minimum Warwick would do it for their BO series, given what they cost...but they don't.

I label screws as they come out so I know where they're supposed to go putting them back in, and hand-thread them in until the very end, but most folks wouldn't know how to do even that. It's a problem It's not a BIG problem.

this thread is based on an assumption that isn't true, but it's an interesting point, hence why I liked the OP post. The assumption was that new thread would be cut when screwing back in.

When screwing them back in, finger turn them to start and get them into the same threads as they came out of.

This is how I've always done it - it seems obvious to me, but maybe it isn't to everybody who hasn't worked with wood in this way.

Yes, it is STILL a destructive process... but I swear on my life that roughly a third of the bolt on basses I've bought have required at least a tiny shim to get the action to the low level I like it, since the bridge saddles typically were already as low as they could go without being out of the physical system, and the truss rod was set to a reasonable tension by that point.

Removing the neck is required in these cases.

I've removed and reattached necks, not always the same ones as came off, hundreds and hundreds of times. On my own instruments that I've kept for decades. I've improved instruments in every case or at least made them exactly as they were before if no improvements were made (sometimes removal is needed for other reasons than playability changes).

I never have and never will do it to look at what the neck or pocket says in there LoL - but that's because I'm not a collector, I'm a musician (....just kidding folks.... no judgement here

UPDATE I should also add that on a couple of my 6 string guitars and on my cheapo ibanez bass, I've removed and reattached the necks dozens of times as I've adjusted shims, repaired things, etc. In all cases I've never had any side effects from doing so, they always bolt on perfectly and the bolts don't seem to go in any further than they did before (if they do then it's so minute as to be inconsequential), and the guitars have improved immensely from all of the work.

I'm a technician and also a pretty curious guy... but this always rustles my jimmies. A lot of basses have what is called a "bolt-on" construction. In fact no bolt ever comes near it (wish they did). It is "screwed on" and everyone who ever used screws knows that it's in some way a destructive process. As a screw is turned in, the "thread" is being cut. This is not neat and nice thread like when a bolt is used, but crude and actually different for each screw. It's a very secure connection and solid and ridgid etc, but when you loosen the screws to remove the neck, you can, in some cases, see wood come out of the hole. meaning, the next time you reinstall it, the screws will have lost some power, tightening wise. worst thing that can happen is not the same screw in the same hole. No screw is exactly the same as an other one.

I know i'm a Nitpick right now, but i've been thinking about this for quite a while and find myself looking at awesome J-Basses that are and look great, but i hit the little cross as soon as i see a picture with the neck removed or a clearly damaged neck-joint.

Am i alone in this? am i going too far with it? Should i go to therapy?
You are 100% correct, as anyone who works in wood knows. You can safely remove and replace a screw if you have to, but to do it when you don't need to is taking an unnecessary risk. In fact, if I came from Garrelsweer (wherever the heck that is) I'd say it rustles my jimmies too! Good call man

...I've been saying this for years, and people usually look at me like I've got something strange growing out of my forehead... leave them necks on!
