Lee Sklar type double P ?

BC Rich mockingbirds, Warlocks, Bich's have all been dual P pup setup for most part.

That's curious. Three years ago I had Warmoth do a custom build for me with a P/MM and they reversed it no problem.

My '80 Mockingbird has reversed double P's.

Does anyone know of a stock setup for a double P bass, ala Sklars home made bass, where the two P are in jazz pickup location more or less.
Doesnt have to be reverse P but that would be cool as well.
Just looking to AVOID assembling my own or routing a bass.

I have wanted to build a bass like Lee's for a while, and found an old Yamaha BB400 with the reverse P and added a second reverse P at the bridge. Use Bartolini 8S pups - I think Lee said that is what he had. Sounds very nice, but the neck pup needs to move more towards the neck.

FYI - the bridge P Pup adds a bit of solid growl without the brightness of a J pup.

Double P do sound wicked though. Very, very cool.

Sklar's main bass has early EMG pickups. He's said he got the right when EMG first was working on them.

I haven't seen anything stock that's similar. If you watch the youtube vids you'll notice, as lee states, they are in the typical J position. They are reversed so the neck P (on the G & D) makes it look quite close to the neck.

Lee tends to rest his forearm on top of the waist of the body with his thumb on top of the neck pup while fingering. He has a very relaxed style, no tension at all.

The body they used was made by Charvel who where making Fender replacements at the time. It is a Precision Body (Alder) with the usual P pup routed. They then routed the new positions. Making a cover, can't quite see it but you can see four screws in between the two pups. 2 above and 2 below.

[You might have watched it before but there's a close up of Lee playing and if you pause it, you'll see the cover screws. Or they could be screws from previous thumb and finger rests.]

I'm not sure whats happened to the band as the website shows up as expired but they are still on myspace.

He loves his Dingwalls (and who wouldn't for nix) cause they (5 stringers) cover work he has to do in replacing bass synth parts. One of them has D-tuners on E & B. So he tends to take them on the road for Toto and Phil Collins but his goto is the frankenstein.

Put me in the 'I want one too' club. Might have to get a hold of a cheap P and di(myself) I'm also considering, instead of the staggered P's trying the pup setup on the Dings.... single coils slanted. Anyway probably the only way to get a similar sounding bass to Lee's is to replicate it.. exactly, if thats possible.

Just stumbled on this old thread doing a search, cool vid of Lee, nice guy, met him at NAMM. I've had one of the Gibson Sklars for the past dozen years or so, it's a very distinct, precise, clean sounding bass, sits so very well in the mix.

I've been playing nothing but fivers, and while I have enough instruments to fit my gigging needs, I've had a hankering for a five string precision, or P/J. A pair of reversed P's would be a gas, too. I have one of the few Gibson V passive five stringers that were made, and it can do a pretty nice P bass imitation, but is so very versatile with the bridge humbucker, too.

Here's mine. I built this tribute bass this summer after doing tons of research. Came out great. It's nice and light (8.2 lbs) and balances beautifully. Sounds great too!

None of the above. The whole neck pickup on that bass is closer to the neck than on a standard jazz bass.

Yes, and since the pickup halves for the d and g strings are closer to the neck, those strings have a fullness to them that's really great. The EMGs are very clear. The bass is very even and clear sounding. And with the EA amp, you can hear every nuance - it's humbling!
