Legit 78 Precision??

I own a '78 P Bass myself. This Bass does look legit.

There should also be a serial number under neath the pickgard stuck onto the body. It'll be underneath the pickups and the brass ground plate. It's a barcode/serial sticker with Fender logo. This is what I would think someone faking a Fender wouldn't think of.

This serial number maybe different like mine was. This is probably due to the fact being a mass produced instrument that bodys and necks were assembled in large batches.

I know mine is or better be legit because I bought it brand new from a music dealer in 1981.

Well I never thought I'd be the subject of a 'is this a real Fender???' thread, but here we are!

A guy at work brought it to me to look at. He said his recently passed away uncle had it since the 70's. Serial checks out to be 77/78. I'm no Fender expert but appears to be mostly original.

The only thing that really stood out is the truss rod cover fill-in at the headstock. But like I said, that may be how they did it back then. Also not sure if the thumb rest was added.

But here are the pics, please Fender guys share your thoughts on it!

BTW, what is the logic behind blurring the Serial Number? A fender serial number will only tell you roughly the production date and nothing else , and not even differentiate between bass or guitar.

I think the idea is that some unsavory folks will see the serial number and slap it on a knockoff p-bass, trying to pass it off as authentic. A bit of a longshot but whatever helps people sleep at night.

Just an observation:

The string alignment is too far to the treble side but since I can’t see the bridge, I can’t tell why? I’m curious what’s under that bridge cover?

It’s a very cool color.
Looks like a nice cowboy hat, gun and holster and some cowboy boots would go real nice with that color scheme. :smug:
