Putting the Fender "Name" on a Non-Fender *Please Read OP*


The conclusion of my thread was basically: a lot of TB'ers think that even the slightest nod (i.e. A neckplate lol) to the Fender brand name is practically producing a counterfeit. Some other, may I say, more logical thinking TB'ers feel that it only makes sense given there were authentic "F" word parts involved.

I feel like, here at least, we seem to devalue certain instruments purely because they're not Fenders. At the same time we have many people who swear against good ol' Fenderooney because... Well I don't know exactly why. Each person has their own reasons.

Parts bass, but probably more value than a Warmoth or AllParts.

I will give props to the seller for being honest about it though. That is rare to see.

The hand wringing in these threads is absolutely delightful. If it's an American Fender™ body, and an American Fender™ neck, then it sounds like it satisfies the TB Fender™ Orthodox Society's requirements of calling itself a USA Fender™.

Unsurprisingly nobody here bought the damn thing anyway. Yo Mods, how's about starting another sub forum dedicated to whether "this is a real Fender Whatever" or not. God knows there are getting to be enough of them these days. Fair enough if the OP's looking to buy and has legitimate doubts, especially on a bass from the '60s or '70s etc, but ones like this where the seller isn't misrepresenting as such, on an affordable bass? Really? Feel free to kick those tyres if you're in the market but if you're just driving by, leave well alone and let 'caveat emptor' be the rule.
A couple of years back these threads would pop up from time to time re maybe a suspect '72 jazz on Craigslist & would generally get enough sound replies on the first two pages on which to base a decision about buying/ignoring. Nowadays seems like a lot of folks here are trying to earn brownie points for being the first to spot a possible "fake", with x pages worth of others chiming in with outraged opinions on something that they'd no interest in from the gate.
There are a few cats who've been around TB since the Earth was cooling and clearly know about particular brands of bass, amp etc and whose posts are worth taking seriously. Noticeably absent these days (probably because they come from a time when TB had threads about, well, more bass-oriented matters, not just people wanting to point fingers at someone on the 'net who've not even pissed 'em off personally. A few pages in and all this outrage is looking like a 21st Century witchhunt.
Re this thread; noting that the auction has ended with (one assumes) no sale yet, I'd like to say "Good luck with your (totally legitimate) sale" to the seller, and "Shut up and play/ practise yer damn' bass" to the onlookers gathered round the mauled remains of his (ended, thus no longer relevant) sale.
