These basses are as close to perfection as you can get with the exception of that headstock. No offense but that is off to me.

The headstock looks are a bit odd but they’ve grown on me.

My biggest hesitation on getting an order going is the upper horn cutaway isn’t as deep as I like. This is an issue for me for physical ability reasons. Okay, my second biggest hesitation is deciding on colors and features, and the concern that I’ll probably want a second one

These are from a friend who isn't on TB. He's a veteran with back issues so when he placed the order the weight goal was 8 1/4 pounds... and hey, look at that! He says balance is perfect, no neck dive, and he's 100% thrilled overall.

He has a second on order that will apparently be the first LEH 24-fretter.

Does anyone know if Ellis does 35" 5 strings? I know Sadowsky only did 34 and the website only says 34, but not sure if there is a hidden option or request for 35 inch scale.

Hi! Sorry, I'm not planning on doing any 35" scales. I get a very tight B string through the neck pocket geometry and personally just feel more at home on a 34.

Agreed, plus they're educational as well- I have learned a lot about how and why things are done through them (not saying I'm becoming a luthier any time soon ).

Excited to get to go see the progress on my LEH today. Hopefully I can post a couple pics.

I took delivery of LEH #91 a month or so back. I've been blessed to own Sadowsky's (NYC, Metro, and SMX), a USA Lakland 55-94, and countless other basses in my now 50+ years of playing bass. I've kept the Sadowsky's and several Laklands and while I love them - my LEH is simply the best feeling and playing bass I've ever owned.

Ellis is simply a joy to work with. They are so focused on delivering what you are imagining and the collaboration was such an amazingly fun process. The pics below don't do #91 justice honestly - it's something to see in person. And our regular soundman tells me that it's the best bass sound I've had of all the basses I've played.

Ellis is almost done with my 5-string (#99) and I'm so stoked to get that bass. For anyone that's trying to decide on whether to order an LEH and work with Ellis - all I can say is "do it"!

I should add that we tried out the "vintage white" knobs and sliders (as you see in that pic) but opted for black as they went much better with the pickups.

Here's a pic of the matching headstock - Ellis did a masterful job of pulling some cool quilt to match the top. The finish is a caramel burst that I took from the way Collings Guitars does their caramel burst.

Just got out of their shop and I’m impressed with how it’s coming. Picked out my fretboard and the section of my top wood cutoff that will be used on the 12th fret.

@emjazz I did! It’s been fantastic. The neck is extremely comfortable and I love that the chambering did reduce the weight slightly, but mostly just made it extremely resonate. Easily one of the best basses I’ve ever owned.

Out of curiosity what is the weight on it?

I haven’t weighed it, but my guess would be in the mid 8s. It definitely feels under 9.

Glad you like the finish! I love it too and it’s looks even better in person. It’s a little more sparkly in person, giving it a lighter black color. I sent Ellis a pic of a Gretsch Starlight Sparkle and then took it back a little on the flake. I wanted a solid black headstock to look like a gretsch or Les Paul type of look and Ellis threw out the idea of going matte on the headstock to match the pickguard. Love how it turned out.

It’s been the only bass I’ve played since getting it. It’s incredibly versatile with the big rig in the bridge.

Cool, so you got to pick the base color and the flake that went in? Could get some interesting combos with that. I like a dark base with some color in the flake, like a black/charcoal with blue or purple flake to make it look like outer space.

I'm hopefully going to get a build in the next couple of years, so living vicariously through all of you for now.
