Less than 50%????????????

In my opinion... if you don't have all the money at time of ordering you're only asking for some kind of drama or tragedy to strike. If you can't afford half... you probably shouldn't be ordering it.

IMHO.

Very true. There are many heart breaking stories of someone getting their dream bass and an unexpected bill coming up....and a few who forgot about usual expected bills. :atoz:

I agree with the last two poster's about credit cards. I think this whole "financial crisis/meltdown/catastrophe" has given credit cards a bad name. A well established credit history can get you a long way in life when it comes time to buy certain things.. namely a house. I use my credit cards like debit cards and never put more on the card than what's in my checking account, thus building my credit history and not putting me into debt.

On topic: With the the markets the way they are it's totally understandable for a builder to ask for a significant portion of the purchase up front. It's different when you're on the other side and you can't get anyone to pay you for the hours of work you've done (like our company.. :help:).

Make a savings plan to determine how much you can save per month and you'll be able to tell how long it'll take before you have the bass. Good luck.

Seems like a lot of people are offering advice, however sound, to a questions that wasn't asked, as such. The OP asked where he could have a custom-built bass made where he can put down less than half, so IMO, any comments should be related to that, not his choice of financial decision-making. We should be assuming he's mature enough to decide what he can afford, not commenting on how he's being fiscally irresponsible.

To the OP: my advice is to try calling some of the bigger bass-specialty shops that might be able to afford to carry the bass should you back out at the last minute. It's not unheard of, just not all that common.

While I haven't personally purchased in the terms you're looking for, you could try someone like Bass Northwest or Bass Central. I thought of those two because they tend to have larger inventories of basses. I'm going under the assumption here that because they tend to have larger inventories, they might be able to make accommodations to keep the bass in their inventory if something were to happen to the deal. If they have problems with this, you could try talking to the owners of the store to see if they'd be amenable if you were willing to make a certain-size non-refundable deposit.

Keep in mind I'm not suggesting they will do this for you, but it's worth a phone call, isn't it?
