I was going to bring up the point about everyone having different goals when it comes to bass playing and making music in general. Thanks Brad for injecting this in.
Bass playing is no different from living life, not everyone wants to be president, senator, congress person, or even a supervisor in a company. The fact that they don't want to aspire to these things doesn't mean that their life is a failure, and the fact that they don't want to aspire to be like player X or play to the outer edges of their ability doesn't mean that their life as a bassist is a failure either.
If this was a place where bassist gathered in person there would be more discussion about gear and non-bass related stuff than about theory or technique, which is just how it is here. I can understand wanting to have serious discussions about being a bassist and a musician when that's your primary focus, but there is also a whole lot of other stuff to talk about.
