Let the Insanity begin!

A nice project .. just a few questions if you don't mind thou...

1. wattage handling ability?
2. mono or stereo cabinet?
3. anticipated weight of the finished cab?
4. what gauge wire in your harness?
5. Speakon" or 1/4" inputs, or both?
6. you using castors or a dolly to move it?
7. cover it with duratex or tolex?
8. are you covered with health insurance?

Low sensitivity driver x 16.

If that's the driver, my quick sim. shows it'll play good up to about 130 watts of input where you reach xmax. That's not too bad, there are a lot of cabs that hit that with less than 100 watts. It'll play 120+ db above 100hz. That's using the .33 cu.ft. per driver mentioned in the pdf. and a flat signal, no bass boosting. It goes plenty deep this way, any bigger of a box and you'll fart it out with less input anyway.

Cool idea, let us know how it sounds. I just off the top if my head entered using 2 x 4inch ports. Yours look like they could be 5 inch? Shouldn't have too much trouble with port noise.

1 - i believe about 500
2 - mono - single input, no tweeter, no crossover, simple is the word
3 - about 90 pounds
4 - i'm going to use 14 gauge "primary" wire
5 - 1/4" only, no particular reason
6 - there will be casters later, i just don't have any right now
7 - duratex - second coat will go on today
8 - yup ;)

i think the ports are 6" maybe? they look larger than the drivers.
 
so here's why you should make damned sure you get your surface perfect before using duratex to cover your cabinet:

The first two are cracking of the material over dried glue. Subsequent re-coating of the cabinet covered this well enough, but next time we'll clean up better.

The last one is where the duratex didn't play nice with the filler putty. I'm guessing I just didn't wait long enough for the putty to dry. What can I say, I'm impatient. :D:D
 
And here's where we stand tonight:

The duratex is finished. Ports, handles and jack plate are installed. Cab is sealed at the joints and handles. The 4 drivers seen in the photo are wired together, but not to the jack. I'm wiring in groups of 4 to avoid confusion and possibly winding up doing something wrong.


Couple of Early Lessons Learned:
1 - Don't be stingy with your materials. The duratex needs to go on heavy the first time, or you'll be coating again. Also - if you get the roller grade duratex, use a roller. I did a brush and it went OK, but given the choice to do it again, I'd use a roller.

Also don't be stingy with your wire. The ****'s cheap, they'll make more. I'm doing as much of the soldering as possible on the bench instead of in the cabinet. I "prewired" the drivers partially, so that I would only have to make a few solder connections at the cabinet. Unfortunately, I got stingy with my wire, and a couple of the connections were a serious PITA to make.

2 - Cabinets with removable backs are your friend. Seriously burdi man - if we do this again, please build it with a removable back. It would make connecting drivers that much easier.

Otherwise, it's all going well. Another couple of nights and I should have the wiring finished. I'll get the grille sorted as well, and some casters.
