If you rout out a swimming pool, I have a suggestion... paint the bass black, and commission a pg that covers the swimming pool route, and makes your bass look like it's wearing a tux... so make that bridge pickup an MM, it looks the most like a cummerbund....

Let's say that you had recently acquired an inexpensive but good quality bass for, basically, pennies. Also, let's say that said bass is more than acceptable, but closely enough covers ground you already have covered with other basses. It is pretty good, but, somewhat redundant, as this bass has a P/J PU setup, and you already have both a P and a J.

If you were to change out the PUs for something different and more "fun", what would you choose? Routing or basic mods are fine. (Please bear in mind that this bass wants to be passive, but fairly aggressive, and that all parts are likely to be sourced through TB classifieds, as I am broke. ;) )

Thunderbird? Bartolini Soapbars? Jazz? P-90s? :D
Have useful suggestions or info? Or, maybe some jokes about pirates playing bass?

Oh hell no. If I put in a swimming pool rout, I'm putting a couple of threaded posts and a motor to turn them, and I'm going to have the pickups moving up and down the body continuously while I'm playing, so no pg for this cat.

And for the record, I'll be doing it in the name of properly punishing the audience for their collective previous sins...I see no good tone in the future of that instrument, just a lot of giggles on my part...

Oooooh, forgot about lace! How about 3 lace alumitone singles, wired like a strat?!?! Or two and a bass bar like a fat strat, or two bars and a single like the 80s guitars (HSH)...

I don't know that I'd do routing and stuff. There's a ton of variation just with pickups and preamps. If your P and J are both more vintage tone, get 18V EMGs or something. Or vice-versa.

For me, I'd like to add a four-string P/J to compliment my BTB for playing punk and slap, so I'd go with something wound really bright and hot.

I recently acquired a jazz bass. As much as I love stingrays and p basses, and also have plans to gain at least 1 down the track, the jazz bass is always going to be my go to jazz. But now, I find myself day dreaming about owning my dream jazz, even though I just bought a jazz! (Don't u just love GAS?)
Something along the lines of joe darts white tort and rosewood j. (Anyone actually know the model of his bass, or at least the pickups in it, it has a real unique bassy growl to it!)

But what I'm saying is, if I got another jazz, even though I don't need it and the smart choice for me would be to get a ray next, I would maybe get a decent Squier vm and mod with some nice pups, tuners, bridge, or maybe just buy all the parts myself online and build from scratch. Idk.

But what I'm saying is, even though I would have two of the same bass, I would make sure the 2nd wouldn't be the same. My current jazz has a maple neck with alnico 5s strung with rounds. My next jazz might have alnico 2s on rosewood with flats. Or something like that. Both will sound like a jazz, but have slight tonal and performance variations to make them 2 individual basses.

To attempt to de-murk the waters...

Firstly, this is the bass that started this brain cloud... The feel of a P bass with the sound of a T Bird... Yum.[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

I have a decent Jazz with passive Barts, which covers a lot of sonic territory, and a sweet Precision which has "the sound", and sports unknown alnico PUs.

The PJ above has ceramic PUs, which sound fine, but, again, thinking something different...

More suggestions are welcome... ;)

Wellllllll...I would never think that........For one, I don't own a P or care to - I have basses that get good enough P-tone by using the appropriate pickup when soloed (now including this hypothetical beast).....as far as having a J, which I do, but two J pickups "On" and a P/J with both pickups "On" dont sound like each other at all, so itsnot redundant (for me anyway, except that I already own one PJ :D)
