I really like my Hagerman Valve. I recently put it in front of a Line6 Pod Express Bass and it creates lovely grit and creaminess.

I just checked this one out on their website. One of the demo Youtube clips has a bass demo with the player showing tomes with the pedal off and then on. I think this is really good example of a subtle tone enhancer/sweetener. I really like what this pedal does on the demo. Bass demo starts around 7.41.

This very video is one of the reasons I bought it, that + the Edison was back ordered. There’s very little that is comparable, even before you take the price into account ($150 ish). Also, Jim Hagerman is super responsive to questions and feedback. Happy to support a small pedal manufacturer like him.

ETA: I bought one of these to gift to my cousin, who is a guitar player, and he’s been thrilled with it as well.

Yes, this pedal looks really good. I'm building a second pedal board with an HXStomp. My other board has a Khan that sounds fantastic. Although I want that sound, I don't really want to purchase another Khan. Wondering what this pedal would sound like right after the Stomp. Might be interesting to try out.

I run mine into my pod express because it serves as my interface. It also works well after.

Broughton Omnicomp

I thought the Omnicomp did *not* sweeten, and so I preferred it to the Empress Bass Compressor, which sounded to me like it always sweetened a little, even when not compressing.

Xotic RC Bass Booster.

Indeed a magic box for passive basses that adds a special somethin' (when you still want your bass to sound...passive).

I bought the RC because I wanted a booster but the salesman said to me, "You're going to end up wanting to just leave it on all the time". He was right.

Not exactly, in my experience. The PPB is dirty while the RC is clean. The PPB is great, don't get me wrong, but they don't sound close to the same to my ears. The RC has a Baxandall tonestack too, so that makes a difference, while the PPB has level and bias.

To me, they're same types of pedals (i.e., tone-enhancing boosts/preamps) and have very different tonal palettes. Ymmv.

Nowadays I just use a JHS punchline with or without a mammoth and submarine.

I have been revisiting my Chase tone secret preamp recently and still can’t figure what it is exactly that it does so well but it’s great (and it’s not saturation and not pure eq)
