You get a baked in tone plus two frequency bands you can boost.
It's super easy: Plug it in, switch it on, turn up the highs until you hit the sweet spot, turn up the lows until you hit the sweet spot - done. That's your sound.

Is it roughly an Aguilar onboard 2 band pre housed in a pedal?

To me, a Neve strip sounds a lot like the older console strips, but admittedly it's been awhile since I've used any of it in person, and certainly not since I have had a JHS. I doubt that I could tell the difference between a Neve and an API, etc in a recording anyways.

In any event, I like the JHS, it's tone shaping capabilities pair great with a Fender TMB preamps, it does the OD console sounds very well, and it may or may not sound like a Neve to some ppl. Also, there are lots of ways with flexible a lot of gear to get a lot of sounds.

Do you have experience with the two versions of the Colour Box? I think I read somewhere that the V1 is to be preferred?

I didn't believe the DB925 could be that good with only 2 knobs, but I was mistaken. With my headphones while on Youtube I listened to some reviews of the DB925, and not long after I bought one. One of the best preamps imo! Simple, yet so very effective and musical. I pair it with an Empress Bass Compressor and Southampton 5th Gear, a clean Schertler BF15 and my trusty L2K. Even if I had the money to get a Mesa Subway DI +, I wouldn't part with the DB925. Do yourself a favor and check it out, it is really that good.

Thanks! So is it basically the same circuit as the old DB924, in a smaller box without the volume control and running at 9v instead of 18v?

Like a few others here I’ve tried several of the frequently recommended tone sweetners and currently have a PPB, Linden EQ, Olympic and an Ictineo in my small collection. All added a little something but not necessarily additive with each other. After reading @el murdoque threads on preamps and drive pedals I picked up a Saturn VI which kicked off a recently acquired Ictineo and Li’l Fella! The Saturn gives me what I was looking for adding a bit of warmth and harmonics without sounding to much like a drive and I really like the range of the tone control! I’ve got that running into a Darkglass Infinity and using the tube pre sim to create my main tone! Sounds great through headphones!

As mentioned in previous threads about similar pedals (and as others have mentioned) a lot of these pedal picks are light overdrives/boosts and compressors, all of which seem to add an element of something to tone that is pleasing to the ear!!
