I own the same or a very similar fretless Cort bass with the 'fortress' bridge. Does yours have a wenge neck? I also removed the Mk1 preamp. I didn't like the sound of it, and mine still has 5 knobs but is wired like a Jazz bass using only upper 3. Do you know what model yours is? I have no idea as I found it used at GC.

Yep.

You have a 2000-2004 model year Cort B4FL. I've got some (four total). After 2004 they left somewhat more wood on the body and moved the Cort logo off of the truss rod cover and onto the peghead itself. Which you can see in the one in my photo - it's a late 2004. Yes, the neck is all wenge - 1 piece in the case of yours. The date is usually on the back of the peghead.

At some point around 2011 they went to a regular Hipshot bridge, five-piece wenge/maple neck and external gear tuners. The tuners are an upgrade. i find I like some things about the "fortress" bridge as opposed to the Hipshot, but it sure makes it easier for them to make with the Hipshot.

Like you, I've gone to the three-pot J-bass wiring harness and I just finally got around to plugging/patching/refinishing the holes. The active electronics just made it sound worse. I am EXTREMELY happy with these basses now.

What is your experience/opinion of the sister Funk Machine? After finding the B4FL so pleasing, I wanted a fretted one. The FM had the same bridge so I sought one out. It seems that the Fishman electronics are better at least with frets. Thanks for the info!

No problem!

Never played the TM. Looks nice. For me, what really makes the B4FL is the wenge neck. I've got both the "fortress" and Hipshot versions and they frankly sound pretty much the same. I have played the C-series Cort basses with maple necks - OK but not what I was looking for.

The wenge sings. Now, Cort makes a B4 standard that is both a wenge neck and a wenge fingerboard. Wish they'd done that for the fretless. But a B4 fretted might be a fretted bass I'd actually use. Been looking for one for a while, the right one at the right price. It'll turn up soon enough.
