Let's See Your Hot-Rodded Cheapo Basses!

I think this is the kind of a bass you are looking for in this post:
Schecter Elite 5 String Neck-Thru
• Hipshot Ultralight Tuners
• Bone Nut
• Delano Soapbar Pickups
• 9v. Audere VVBT Preamp with battery box.
• Parallel/Single/Series Switch for each pickup
• BABICZ Solo-Rails Bridge
• Fully copper shielded cavities
• Schaller Strap Locks
• Electro-Socket Jack

Literally, the only thing that's still original is the finish and the headstock decal...

24 frets, weights just under 8.5 lbs. Super low action and (6.5mm) tight spacing. completely great for someone like me who is a 4-string player at heart, but needs a 5 for certain things sometimes. It can cover a wide variety of tonal bases, and the neck feel isn't too different to me than my modern C Profile 4-string Fender P-Bass.

Many Schecters can be found inexpensively, but what's the story here? I doubt those strings came stock, but did you change anything else?

Yea, I didn't name the strings, sorry, I knew I was forgetting something... The strings on it are light gauge DR Black Beauties. They are awesome. I did have some Labella Low Tension Flats on there for a little bit. It wasn't the best choice for that bass, but I like the feel of them. They didn't sound as wrong as you would think....

I switched out the flats for the black beauties when I did the preamp. Interestingly, the LTFs and the BBs are similar in gauge, so only a micro adjustment to the truss rod. Something like a quarter turn if I remember right...

Nice! I don't think your write-up had come through when I first saw your post. Got it now.

Still rocking this hard. AP II 77 Precise bass given to me with zero Electronics or PG. Had a route done and dropped a Bill Lawrence PJ set in it. After the bridge pick up crapped its pants, and zero help from the manufacturer I dropped a Fralin set in with a 5% overwind on bridge pick up. It freaking kills now. Rock this as much as anything else I have.

This is Li'l Red, a Squier Mini P I picked up NIB for €149. I applied Red Pearl Block inlay stickers, restrung with Ibanez Mikro strings (except for the G, which is a generic .045 nickel roundwound), and added red knobs that go to 11.

The original price was €169, but I got a €20 refund because of a scratch on the upper horn.

If you don't mind having the fat part of the string wound around the tuner post, any short scale strings will fit. I do mind, and Ibanez Mikro strings have the perfect winding length to taper for this bass.

Very cool bass!

Shipping delays. Followed by my being evacuated due to wildfires.
This neck arrived and sat on my porch getting covered with ash for 5 days.
Survived it's journey. Re-shaped the pickguard and neck pocket.

A 5 string UNDER 8 lbs !??!!!?

Build Final Deets: 7lbs 10oz Strung with DR Pure Blues

Neck: Squier VM Jazz Bass BNB 5 string neck

Hipshot UL Y tuners
Aluminum 3 string tree
Shim under the neck
Filed the nut, dressed frets.

Body: Hot Pink 4 string Paulownia clearanced Jazz bass body

MEC Silver logo Dynamic Correction (passive) Jazz pickup set.
Fender Black Glass Glitter pickguard
Engraved knobs and control plate from 'Bay
Wilkinson vintage style bridge w/ threaded saddles

OH man is this fun! feels like it is not real!
Hollow , made with styrofoam, filled with helium.
The tone and playability are really good, very punchy and growly. Strong signal with tight bass, crisp top end , and present, not scooped in the mids. Sustain is good. "Feels" really resonant in the hands.

That's DREAMY.

Glad you're managing with the fires on your side of the state. We had our car packed last night, but got a pleasant bit of rain instead of the dry lightning we had feared.

And good call on the Kia Soul! We had to go to the jumbo Kia Soul (a Ford Flex) when our third kid came along, but what a versatile box on wheels.

We're not out of the #sculightningcomplex hot zone yet, it burned a circle completely around my small canyon community: and consumed the fuel- so we were allowed to return.

The Ford Flex reminds me of the first-gen Scion XB stretched :)
