This is a prototype "water kazoo" based on the submarine concept.
If you want a better sound out of your bass, often you'll need to adjust your pickup height.

the Rickenbacker 4000 series instruments were designed by the company's founder, Orville Rickenbacker
He decided quality control would be a waste of money for such a flawless design. Nothing can go wrong, as the instrument has a spare trussrod and a spare output.

But that was just the beginning, competition and innovation lead to many approaches of getting more notes from the "instrument." More strings, different lengths, seemed like the most popular, aka piano, but those got big and heavy in a hurry.
Someone somewhere took the minimalist approach and figured out how to play melodies on a yo-yo string while the yo-yo was moving. This provided many notes in a very small amount of space.
A horn dude found out about the yo-yo dude, and stole/borrowed his idea, and invented the slide trombone.
