Let's spread some musical misinformation

Eighths of what?
Pieces of eighths.

And thus the origin of pirated music, music pirates, and pirate musicals featuring musical pirates.

Wasn't it just after the Ju Ju Bees merged Country and Rock and released their album "Crock".

It was followed by a Side B compilation that fit in a paired case, entitled "Pot". It featired some of their slower songs they'd cooked up.

Earlier this week, in honor of the Ides of March, We Came As Romans got together and stabbed their lead singer repeatedly.

I'd want to say it was pointless - but it wasn't. :p

'The Pirates of Penzance' has a much punchier title than the more recent musical "Illegal downloaders of the Cornwall area"

Gear tip for the day - Drop Tuning.

Drop Tuning is a difficult skill to master but once you learn the basics you can have fun experimenting with how it can change your signature sound.

First you need to understand the purpose of Drop Tuning. There are many instances where your lead singer or other band mates may have a preference to play a song in a different key. This is not uncommon and nearly every bass player will eventually be asked at some point in their gigging career to drop tune for a specific song.

The challenge is to successfully and repeatedly arrive at the proper drop tuning key when needed. Some beginners will use special drop tuning aids like lever actuated tuning machines made by hipshot and other brands. But these are essentially "training wheels" for beginning bass players. In reality, what they are doing is called "lever tuning". It works but it's a crutch that will limit your potential to just one specific drop key tuning.

The pros have moved beyond the lever method and on to actual "drop tuning". In essence (and yes it takes a lot of practice) the pros will literally drop their bass on the floor and pick it up to check if the tuning has changed to the desired key. Those that have mastered this method will only need to drop their bass once to get in the correct key. Most pros practice this method on Gibson basses (hence, the large number of broken head stocks).

So there you have it, now get out there and buy a Gibson bass and practice your drop tuning methods. You'll have it mastered in no time!

Some have developed very advanced techniques.

Hang On Loopy, Hang On.

When that song came out, not many people were into looping because it was expensive and on the fringe of accepted social behaviour.

The barrier to entry, ie the expense, of looping has come down considerably since then and increasing numbers of bass players are getting loopy. However, as stated, the cost of treatment has come down and you may qualify for regional mental health care as the number of psychologists and psychiatrists working with local organizations increases as well.
