Letter from Jaco

I have had a letter from Jaco Pastorius that he wrote to me in 1979. I've guarded it for years but it's getting a little fragile and needs a better home where it can be properly preserved for posterity. In his written reply, Jaco kindly answered a lot of questions I asked about bass playing .. his technique, gear, musical influences, etc.

Jaco's widow, Ingrid, posted a scan of the letter for a few years on her 'Cybernest' website that was a tribute to Jaco, before she passed away a few years ago. She seemed genuinely excited and happy that I had allowed her to post a copy of it online.

I have no idea what the letter worth but I would like to sell it, especially to someone who could promise its long-term protection and preservation. If anybody has suggestions to share, I would like to hear from you. Post or private message me .. I can send scans if you're interested.

Why do you need to profit from an act of generosity?

Why not give the letter to his son Felix. I'm sure a son would love a letter written by his father.

There are any number of organizations that deal in autography, and a few that specialize in signatures etc. by musicians of note. But it might be wise to look into having a paper conservator talk to you about steps to preserve it. Part of the problem with ephemera is that it was never produced with an intent of preservation. Unlike other types of works on paper that use archival level materials, letters, notes, things written on napkins, etc. start to degrade as soon as they're done. So in order to preserve them, steps have to be taken. And since you're not talking about a 17th century architectural drawing, those steps may not be that expensive.
