Letting go of Basses

Im my case its physical room that dictates the number of instruments I own. I can room about 10 instruments. I have eleven right now so ...something has to go!

I have started selling many great basses that see no playing time from me. Unless there is a tone-related or sentimental or investment reason to keep a bass, a bass can move on to other hands (my 50+ herd has thinned down to 45 and still thinning)

50? 45? does OCD intrude into other parts of your life?

only one i really don't use that much and thats my old kramer aluminum fretless

i used to feel bad. but ive ended up with way too many guitars and basses. my new "rule" is that if a bass or guitar goes untouched for over 2 months then it can go... obviously im not using it - not even to noodle around with at home.

I had a few things that I have been meaning to sell for a while, but I could just never get around to it. Then I was hard up for cash so I had to sell them. One is still for sale, if anyone wants it

Just went through the same thing. Had an old Alembic I bought brand new in '83. Havent played it in 8 years, sits on stand in my media room. Finally said "what the heck". Sold it. Didnt see it as a collectible that would appreciate immensily so I finally sold it. Did great on the sale and the new owner loves it. Worked out for all

I find that I have a hard time letting go of a bass when it comes time to sell. Is there anything you say to yourself before you get rid of one?

Yes. I know exactly what you mean, and over the years I've made this discovery. If an instrument ever comes to the point where I'm seriously considering putting it on the block, then I know it can go. In other words, the real keepers never even get considered. When I start to have cold feet, or seller's remorse, I just remind myself of this fact. It always holds true.

Are do you have any basses that you refuse to ever sell?

Yes, as mentioned above, there are instruments I know I'll never sell; I knew it almost from the moment I picked them up. Here's one:

I usually have to have a conversation with myself in which I question whether or not Ill miss the bass. I evaluate how much I actually play it and if its of any use to me. I also see how replaceable itd be if i ever wanted one just like it in the future.
