Marcus Miller does lots I enjoy. He slaps a bunch but the big difference for me compared to other slappers (who I won't name) is that Marcus has a incredible sense of groove. His slapping moves me while that of others is merely fast and generic... more percussive than melodic.

Listen to Marcus on "Big Time" by Miles Davis, "Rampage" or his cover of "Higher Ground."

I too feel Marcus Miller is "miles ahead" (pun intended).

Those perfectly executed double-thumb runs are something I can only dream of doing. I can approach the speed with a pick, but it just wouldn't sound the same.

The open/hammer/pluck line in Victor Wooten's "I Saw God" at 2:27. I can handle most of his OHP stuff, even the really angular odd-time stuff, but the physics of the lick opening with the pluck just throws my muscle memory out the window.

I used to run a mile from all those great extended Stevie Wonder riffs. Until my bass tutor deconstructed one of them for me. The penny dropped and now I can easily work them out and play them all.

Same with Jamiroquai. I just didn't get Stuart Zendor. Another penny dropped and now it's all clear.

I just learned Knocking On Heavens Door by Guns And Roses, all licks and runs, almost non repeated, Duff McKagan is a serious good bassist.

Also just finishing Never Had Any Reason, lots of strong runs and semi leads, with a long solo, the bass is prominent and bold.
