"light" 215's?

Two Kappalite 3015 (not the LF) weigh 15.8 pounds total, and are good to 2500 Hz. Add in a cheap tweeter from 2500 Hz and up, and you've got a bass rig.

Doing easy math, each driver requires 2.76 cubic feet, or 5.52 cubic feet total. Add 0.32 cubic feet for driver displacement, and ignore ports, baffles, bracing, grille, screws, etc.

5.84 cubic feet = 100091.5 cubic inches, or a cube 21.6" on a side.

Using 1/2" plywood, each side is 21.6 * 21.6 * 0.5 = 233.5 cubic inches. Six sides = 1401 cubic inches or 0.81 cubic feet of plywood. I'm ignoring the holes cut in the baffle.

At 41 pounds, 1/2" baltic birch is 33.2 pounds for the cab. Using Okoume foam core ply at 13 pounds, this is 10.5 pounds in wood.

In BB, the 2x15 is ball park at 49 pounds, and the Okoume Foam core is 26.3 pounds. Screws 'n stuff are extra.

Does somebody make this cabinet, or are you just making these calculations to prove a point?

Proving a point. I did the math above as an example of how to estimate weight with a known plywood density.

I normally run a spread sheet for all my designs. It does the tuning calculations and figures all the wood used, including cleats, bracing, cutouts for speaker holes, etc. I factor it for various wood densities, so I get an accurate picture of what it will weigh before firing up the table saw.

Kappalite 3015 and JBL E140 are the drivers for a compact 2x15 cab. Use the E140 only if you already own them, as they weigh 22.5 pounds each, compared to 7.9 pounds for the Kappalite.
 
I have picked up and played that LDS 2x15. It is ridiculously light, and has a huge sound to it. It's really mind-blowing how light that cab is.

The NV215 is somewhere around 90 lbs, I believe, but it is fairly compact and very easy to move around. It also happens to be one of my absolute favorite cabinets ever made. :cool:

He did at the time I tried it, but I believe that that particular cab sold to a certain TBer from the Toledo, Ohio area. ;)
