Light Bass

Zon sonus basses can be very light, and sound great. I've also had a pedulla rapture and an MTD that ware real easy on the shoulders. You're basically looking for something with a downsized body and a 2+2 headstock config so it won't dive even with a light body.

Damn. Look out Ritter. Plywood's a-comin.

FYI - I've actually played a Ritter bass that is essentially "plywood". It's made up of about 10 layers of different woods. It's beautiful, it sounds great, and it's really heavy. You can see the bass on the Ritter website.

Can anyone recommend a good quality light bass?

Having a slightly weakened back I'm looking for a light, versatile bass that I can play a variety of styles on, ranging from funk, melodic rock to blow out metal!

Perhaps there is not just one to cover this spectrum but I would love to hear any suggestions.

Thanks x

I have a lightwave sabre that's a semi hollowbody and is by far the lightest bass I've ever played. I haven't weighed it, but I'd be shocked to find out that it weighed more than 6-7 lbs. Maybe a hofner is lighter, but I'm not even sure of that.
Of course the lightwave is about $450 for a 4 string and the Hofner about $1000. For a solid body, Ibanez basses tend to be pretty light and versitile. Bassically any solid body made out of swamp ash (not hard ash) or basswood is going to be your lightest option.

A current model, affordable base is the Fender Zone 4 string from the Deluxe MIM category. It's has an active pre and sounds very big. Or... the precursor to that model, the Fender MIJ Precision Lyte (P/J) active 4 string bass.

I don't know what the actual weight is, but my Ibanez RB999 "bean bass" is extremely light, lighter than most guitars.

My chambered MTD 535 is pretty light. Here is a quote from another thread where I talked about the weights of some of my basses:
And on that topic, I weighed my 535 at 8.8 lbs. For comparison, the 435 is 8.4 lbs, the Skjold is 9.2 lbs, my 25th Anniversary 24F 5-string Sadowsky is 9.0 lbs (as is my Gibson Thunderbird), my Turner EL-535 is 9.4 lbs, and my DeArmond Pilot 5 Deluxe ties the 535 at 8.8 lbs. The lightweight of my stable (not counting semi-hollow bodies or ABG's) is my old Lotus 4-string at 7.6 lbs, and my Gibson Explorer and Corvette Standard 4-string fretless tie for heaviest honors at 10.6 lbs each!
