Light scale with small ball ends?

I need small ball ends for my short scale Univox. The normal size ball ends cause the bridge to pull away from the body. They are just too big and push against the body and I'm afraid that the bridge will pull off eventually. I also had to drill the string holes to fit regular strings through them. Did they used to have smaller ends?

I would put a different bridge on the thing. Just save the old one.

I'd rather not have to drill for a new bridge. I'm also not sure what will fit on there with the original six bolts.
