Stupid question time.... Home computers that say "Lightscribe" on the CD-R burner portion of it.
What the heck does that do? Is that just a fancy name for the actual disc burner part, or does that allow me to do something on the top of the disc?

Stupid question time.... Home computers that say "Lightscribe" on the CD-R burner portion of it.
What the heck does that do? Is that just a fancy name for the actual disc burner part, or does that allow me to do something on the top of the disc?

I've never used it but you can scribe pics, text, etc on the face of a disc and have music/data on the other side.
Have had quite a bit of experience with these - basically it uses the laser to 'etch' an image or text onto the Lightscribe dye layer on top of the disc. The final image/text looks pretty crisp and nice, only in monochrome though. Requires special discs which come in certain colours (gold was the most common for a while but I think there are more now).
Biggest issue for me is the time it takes to burn - a label can take around 20 - 30 mins to burn.

I have an external Lightscribe cd/dvd burner. The downside is you have to buy Lightscribe discs. Screw that. A marker works fine for me!
I've had and used a few different Lightscribe drives over the years. Like has already been stated, they're slow. But I still use mine when creating CD's for others, with track info, etc. I've also burned a number of images on some CD's as well. Sort of like Cover Art. I find the Lightscrbe drives pretty useful. Though if I'm making a simple CD for myself, I'll use a Sharpie, and just write on the CD. But it does do a pretty nice job when making production style CD's for others in small batches.
