Does G&L still offer empress wood body as a custom option? thx

As far as I know, yes. It’s never been on their web site, but it’s been available for years. I read somewhere that they’ve kept it “unofficial” because supplies of suitable empress aren’t very consistent, but who knows. I also have an empress Comanche guitar, which is great.

I think the newer ones with the Paulownia body are even lighter? Why did they switch from cedar to paulownia anyway?

I’m not sure, I’m yet to see a lighter 5 than mine! I think they’re about the same, going by the weights listed on Bass Direct. I don’t know if paulowina is better for finishing or if it’s any harder wearing. My cedar one is pretty soft and has picked up a couple of minor knocks seemingly just from being looked the wrong way but hey, it adds ‘mojo’ and I actually love the way this bass is wearing in. It feels like a bass that’s had years of play put on it. The cedar run was very short, so perhaps it was a cost or stock choice to swap?
