Lightweight Cabs That Throw...

I used to wonder what people were talking about when this topic came up. Then I watched this clip, supposedly presenting the heaviest "BEHS" tone (Scottish accent) in the world.

Heavy distortion, but rolled off at 100 Hz, or maybe 120. So now I know: if I ever join a doomy band, I'll just roll off all of the low end, kick on a Metal Zone, and hammer the strings.

J/K. Looking forward to the final choices. I might buy the same setup and be done with the almost-good-enough rigs I have now.

I'm using a Subway 800+ and the 2-12 cab with line out to FOH. The kick drum and my low end are set at the same level to drive the band. I use the same amp/cab with a second band but not through the PA, and I have plenty of punch with a P bass. The 2-12 cab weighs 52LBS (4ohms, 800w) and a 1-15 is 8 ohms, 400w and 36LBS. This is the first time I've had speakers that were not 15's since the late 70's, they seem more focused they work for me. Good luck finding the perfect setup.

I agree! I actually have an LDS 215 with Kappalites and it does slay! Hehehe
But he built this cab with a pull-bar at the top and kickback casters, and at 68 lbs it is a breeze to push/pull it anywhere I need...I didnt want to carry 2 cabs for any reason..much less make a second trip to my truck to carry the other cab ;)

This is at a Guitar Center. They will deliver it and let you pay it off over 2 years right now.

These cabs are light, have an adjustable tweeter and can handle 500 watts at 8 ohms.

I know this one wasn't abused because it was mine. I traded it in on some other gear. Got some scratches and stuff but its ready to rock.

I am a big fan of Epifani cabs. I went from a UL410 to a UL210/112 stack for easier transport. This setup with my Mesa Big Block can shake my house off its foundation.

Perhaps sell all your Amps and look at a GK mb fusion (since you dig your GK). Those things are awesome and have two input channels for different drive amounts- but be aware that the master level is not reflected in the DI out (so if you have one input set much higher than the other, you will get large level change on the DI- ok if you want the increase in volume for your more distorted tone, to a point). Or a more powerful RB amp.

I also have a GR NF 112, and I agree it’s a very good cab but not voiced for “old school punch/belly.”

I like what I've seen and heard about the Barefaced 310 so far. Seeing one in person would be interesting.

The 10CR series is more appropriate for your tonal goals IMO (they say "warm, fat, colored"), 12 inch cabs are more hi-fi sounding. They never sound muddy and have a great dispersion (you can hear them from everywhere).

I agree about the 10CR cabs so far, after hearing them (through my phone). I'm getting little sonic features that I relate to from the demos, that are catching my ear.
The Mesa is also interesting.
Man some of this stuff is pricey though. But maybe it's time...

Higher quality is more costly to manufacture.

You certainly can't go wrong with either Mesa or Barefaced, go visit their (enthusiastic) official clubs here on Talkbass, and ask questions. Alex from Barefaced gives great advices by email, he really wants to make sure that each bassist finds the best cab for his very personal needs. And Agedhorse from Mesa is an very active TB member.

Of course, it's always preferable to try a cab for real before buying. In the USA it should be easy to try Mesa Subway cabs in physical stores. One of the problems with Barefaced is that it's almost impossible to try them first.

Two notes from my perspective: First is the Law of Diminishing Returns- how much meaningful appreciation am I getting as I go up the expense ladder; and second, it's possible that I should value my musical endeavors/abilities and offerings more than I tend to.
So this is sort of a re-evaluation time concerning what my musical occupation is worth, among other things. Music has quietly been the center and actual Happy Place of my life since I discovered the bass guitar 46 years ago. Maybe I should give it a proper vehicle.

Buy once and be happy. I have cabs from Barefaced and Bergantino

Really, to echo others, buy once and cry once on a lightweight modern, high displacement 2x12 like Mesa Subway, Barefaced, GR or some such high performance cab. They can push out so much more sound than you think with your WT head.

I recently purchased a Mesa Subway 1x15. Paired with a Fender Rumble 500 head @ 8 ohms its rated at 350 watts. It is very loud and fills a room nicely.
If you were to get a 1x15 & 1x12 (lets say Mesa Subway) you would have more than enough capacity for most anything you would want to do and the flexibility of being able to bring a configuration of amp/speaker cab dependent on the need.

Wanna do a "doom" show, covered. Start playing in an acoustic duo? Covered. Want something with a small footprint to play in your living room? Covered.

We are all very skilled at spending your money! ;)
