Same thing done artfully could be cool.

Yeah. According to the Craigslist ad, it was a 1978 (slab-body), therefore could have been even more valuable if left untouched. I just HATE seeing this done to any T-40 anywhere. It's high time for someone to establish a "T-40 Rescue Organization", and start saving these from evildoers with too much time on their hands. You know, people with tiny brain pans which lead them to believe that vandalizing an iconic, USA-made, 40-year-old piece of musical history is an "improvement".

Sad. Just sad.

Here is a link to a transcript of the 1980 Guitar Player Magazine where he revealed the fate of this Precision. The headstock was apparently also modded to match and the G string tuner moved to the opposite side.

What is extremely cool about this interview is he mentions having just found a '69 or '70 Fender Jazz Bass in a pawn shop for $200 which turned out to be his number one and the basis for the popular signature model. He comments on the thin neck and said that he used it on about half of "Permanent Waves".
