likes/posts ratio

So wait - there are OT posts that aren't a part of our post counts, or is he a special case bcuz of his status in the witless protection program? ;)

Edited for something I'll blame my phone for.

At one point many years back, back when having a high post count was actually a thing here and people were artificially padding their post counts in OT, it was decided that OT posts were no longer added to your total post count.

Is there a way to find which post (from any member) has the most likes in TB?

I don't know of a way to find which specific posts have the most likes, just which members have the most lakes as guy pointed out.

You raise an important point: The "likes" system has only been in place for a few years. To the extent the ratio has any useful meaning at all (which is debatable), it certainly isn't meaningful to compare ratios between people who have been her for different lengths of time.

I believe it only came around in 2014. So those who have a high posting rate since that time have a much higher likelihood of having more likes.

Also, some forums are far, far more active in giving out likes than other forums. The Effects forum regulars give out likes like hotcakes, which is represented pretty clearly in that the top three most liked members post primarily in Effects and have relatively recent join dates. Off Topic is similarly giving with likes.

Why not get rid of post counts & join dates all together?

Make ever member equal.

Amongst other reasons, both can be important determining factors when dealing with people in the Classifieds.

How so? I probably have accounts on other forums that I haven't used in over 10 years that are still active. Does that mean if I sign on there to sell something I am more trustworthy than someone who has been there every day for the last 5 years?

Just a couple of months ago I signed up for a forum, a couple days later I saw something in their classifieds and the transaction went smooth for both parties involved. I should add that there was international shipping involved.

Post counts could be artificially inflated by making one liners or random quotes that have a +1. When I bought the item from the seller mentioned above, I didn't look at any of their posts. I asked a question via PM and judged them by their reply and they happened to do the same to me.

Nope. But you may be considered more trustworthy than someone who registered that same day (or the day before) just to post the ad.

Yep...likes from OT count.

To be honest, I really don't care about like and post counts (sometimes I will not post for ages and then post far too much) but doesn't that seem to be an easy way of increasing this likes/posts ratio?

Post random comments and stuff in OT (which I do regularly by the way), doesn't matter how much you post as every like counts but messages don't.

That's just a matter of not looking at it realistically. Sure, someone could establish a 10 year account with 10,000 posts only saying "+1." My 15 year membership with 25k+ posts could all be an elaborate plot to cheat someone out of a $14 set of strings in the Classifieds. The reality is that these are the extremely rare exceptions to the rule; issues arise most often from new and/or unestablished members. Having a long term membership along with a searchable history of posts can establish both your trust in a user and lets you see what the rest of the community thinks of them as well. TalkBass is far from the first to use this idea- you're going to get a sore wrist if you want to start shaking your fist at all of the businesses that have an "established..." date on the front of their building :D

And FWIW, the +1 phenomenon was always massively less used outside of OT, and the advent of the likes system reduced it greatly even there.

Yep....I would never make a purchase from someone who just signed up.

But there is an almost equal chance that a long time member will burn you and their entire history here. I can remember more "I got ripped off threads" from people who had dealt with long time members more than I can from newbies. Heck, scamming somebody in the classifieds doesn't even get you banned from TB. That being said, people don't bother with feedback because at least one notable scam artist still sold in the classifieds after perpetuating fraud on another member. They also like to use the "hide profile" option so other honest members cannot see they are still active in the classifieds.

With over 200 transactions here, I completely disagree with this statement.

TalkBass Trade Gone Bad <---- straight up fraud and the member still participates in both the forum and classifieds. (EDIT: I see this user finally figured out they can change their name and did so to cover their tracks.)

Do you remember @iualum ? He was a fairly regular poster. I'm sure he still posts here but just with a new handle. He burnt somebody in the classifieds too. At least he didn't try to come back and act like nothing was wrong. Additionally, his case as not a high profile one like the one linked above.

Don't get me wrong, I like having some kind of feedback system I just wouldn't put much stock into it.
