Line 6 HX Effects

Hell yes!! Glad you found that out in here man. It is most def a, very simple and effective, game changer.

Honestly, I just run a crossover wherever it sounds good to my ear. Can’t help you there on a specific answer. But I can tell this, you can totally do what you’re describing in that second query. I think you can store up to 6 (I can’t remember atm!) to one switch. And you can use that one switch to cycle through all the effects you have on that switch and adjust settings where needed. It’s really easy, simple and quick when you learn the pedal. Which doesn’t take that long when you get one in front of you.
I'll tweak with it a bit!

And I think I'm wanting to do something different...where the same effect is assigned to two different switches with each one activating different settings for it...

You can set different foot switches to change different settings on the one block. For example i use the BDDI sim with a mild drive on all the time. I have a second foot switch set to raise the drive level, add a bit more treble and lower the overal output level. Thats two switches for one block. I have also taken the on/off away from a foot switch so its on all the time, and then used just one switch to go between basic and driven tone. One block, one foot switch, two tones.

Has anyone run from the HX effects right to the house? I'm curious if the line out is as high quality as I would get if I ran it through a DI to the house

You can do this for sure. You can change the settings in the Globals menu to suite whatever the situation is. You can change some of the outs/ins to line or instrument level. L6 really did a phenomenal job working out the feature set on the the whole Helix line. The HX is no exception.

I'd probably keep 1-2 of the H9's for synth patches if it were me. The HxFx's synths kind of suck.
I don’t use the H9’s for synth stuff, so I’m good there. They’ve basically been choruses, flangers, phasers, octave, delay, filters (their weakest point, imo) and a couple drives.

If the HX will get me decent versions of most of those, I’ll be happy. I plan on getting either a Tech 21 PSA 2.0 or a Damnation MBD1 for drive duty.

How are the compressors on the HX? I’m currently using a Cali76 CB, and will probably keep on running that, unless there’s a comp or two on the HX that rivals what it can do.

I'm running some of the comps on it and they seem to be good! I do have my specific bass comp still on my board though and dont see getting rid of it.

Regrettably, there isn't an emulation of an 1176-style compressor circuit, BUT there is an LA-2A, which works quite well.

I do miss my Cali76 CB, but I've also found with tweaking and patience, some tasteful compression is achievable in the Helix. Also, remember the Helix is effectively more like a processing chain than a traditional pedals-amp-cab solution. So, having multiple compressors in your chain is totally possible. Having some light compression AFTER your entire signal chain is entirely possible.

I’m pretty sure I’ll hang on to my Cali76. It just adds that certain something to my sound that I really like.

To start with, until I really learn the ropes with this thing, I’ll just be setting up a couple presets of “stompboxes” to replace what my 3 H9’s were doing. And honestly, that might be all I need the HX to do for now.

Finally got around to checking out some of what this thing can do, and how some things sound...basically just getting a feel for how things work.

It’s literally got everything I currently use, effects/sounds-wise (and obviously a whole lot more). I’m seriously considering downsizing my board to being Shure GLXD16>Cali76 CB>HX Effects. It’d make for a much more compact, simpler setup to have.

Not saying that any of the comps could beat that Cali, but if you HAD to, the comps in the HX are pretty damn good too though I imo....

I haven’t dug into them yet, but it’s actually something I’m considering. I’m not a big comp guy, my Cali is set pretty mild. I could get by with a pretty small board if it was just my GLXD and HX on it...

Take this for what it’s worth, I’ve only used compression for a couple years and I’ve only tried a few mid level models that ended up working great for me. Always wanted to try some of the higher end ones. Def want a Cali or a DG hyper luminal at some point. But back to my point, I felt almost all the comps in the helix were really good and there is a nice, broad range of very musical, natural and great sounding comps. But again, I’m def not a comp guy. I know this much, they kill any of the ones that were on the Zoom MS60b I used to have. And I even thought a couple of those weren’t too bad, so, go figure!! Haha
