Line 6 HX Effects

Th LA studio comp for me is used a lot, and same thing as @gregmon79 said, I have tried a few good ones and this one keep up.

And yeah this is my experience too. The LA Studio Comp is a good "add it and go" block. It's very easy to get a nice, mild sound. The Deluxe Comp needs more work, but if you take the time and learn how compressors work, it's just as good, if not more so as you're able to use it in ways where the LA Studio Comp doesn't work.

I do admit, I need to spend time with more of the other compressors...

I tend to follow the path of letting my ears be the judge, but when it comes to compression, my ears appreciate the assistance of some visual feedback. I think the Helix comps would be greatly improved with nothing more than some basic metering.
That’s the biggest difference between the Helix comps and my favorite pedals, visual confirmation.

I hear rumours in 2.90....

I know I'm constantly griping about it but I still just want tube power amp simulation for my hx fx it's the only big gripe I truly have since I sold my two notes torpedo cab that had it built in and a bunch of other pedals to help fund it. I just miss the warmth the tube power amp sim adds with a impulse. The only other minor gripe I could have is not being able to have one output on line level and the other instrument level you can only have them on one or the other. I use my hx fx with a tube preamp with a cabinet impulse and I send it to foh and my iem feed I then run a seperate output with the ir disabled ran to a clean power amp into a cab on stage. If they added those two features to the hx fx it would have made things easier.

Nice to see that might finally come to fruition... [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] has been on the Line 6 Ideascale since 2015 with about 2400 upvotes. I have no idea about the technical aspects of making that happen, but hopefully it's the real deal. Much like @jbybj, compression is still one thing that I get along with better if I have a visual cue. :)

Hey guys I would like to ask something. I have a markbass multiamp which covers the basic needs for gigging and recording effect-wise. I have gotten into a post-rock/ambient project though and I would like to expand the sounds I am getting. Would it be possible to use an hx effects for midi controlling the presets or blocks on multiamp while using the hx effects in the loop of multiamp or vice versa? I red somewhere that hx effects is a multi function midi controller. Thanks!

You can indeed use the HXFX as a MIDI controller. You can program the HXFX with MIDI command sends (both PC and CC) to send a variety of instant and/or footswitch assignable commands. So for example... You could set up [PATCH A] to have an instant command that automatically sends to your Multiamp when you recall the preset, and you could also have a footswitch(es) within the patch programmed to send other commands. Just be aware though, when you assign a MIDI command to a footswitch, that's the only thing you can use it for within the patch.

The Command Center section of the HX Effects manual (page 35) should give you a good idea what you can do with commands. You'll just need to know what commands you need for what you want to do in the Multiamp, and program the HXFX accordingly.

Using the HXFX in the effects loop of the Multiamp shouldn't be a problem, as the audio path and MIDI are separate. You would just plug the HXFX into the Multiamp's effects loop as normal, and then run a MIDI cable out from the HXFX to the Multiamp's In.

Thank you so much for the response. Actually, what i would like to do is:

Having one patch on Multiamp with some block engaged plus Hx Effects in Multiamp's Loop, and having setup a preset in Hx (snapshot mode or pedal mode) that pressing one button on Hx effects can turn on/off one or more multiamp's bolcks while engaging a block or two in Hx effects. So i am guessing i cannot have multiple actions midi/audio involved in the same footswitch.

I will download the manual to check it out although i am total noob on this midi thing.

Also because i did not follow any news on the 2.9 update, meters will be available in Hx effects too?
thanks again!

Now i rembered that i have a Boss RV-500. Isn't it the same thing? I think it has midi capabilities, i need to try it...

No problem, happy to help.

I'm unfamiliar with the Multiamp, but as long as it has a MIDI command for toggling on/off, the HXFX can definitely send toggle commands from one Footswitch. I have a toggle programmed in a couple of my patches to turn my Source Audio C4 on/off. No sweat.

However:
The HXFX can only send one MIDI command per footswitch, and it can't combine MIDI commands and block control on the same footswitch... each footswitch can only do either MIDI OR HXFX block control. So to control multiple blocks in the Multiamp AND HXFX effects blocks, you'd need a combination of footswitches. One MIDI footswitch for each block you want to control in the Multiamp, and the remaining footswitches can control HXFX blocks. You can cheat the system a bit with the HXFX blocks though, as you CAN assign multiple HXFX blocks on one footswitch so you can turn multiple blocks on/off with one switch (Page 29 in the manual discusses assigning blocks to a switch... it's easy!).

You could totally incorporate your RV-500 into MIDI as well, and control both with your HXFX. The biggest thing to remember there is Midi Channels. Since the HXFX would be the controller in your particular setup, I would suggest having the Multiamp on MIDI Channel 1, and the RV-500 on MIDI Channel 2. I'm 99% certain both units have different MIDI commands, but some may overlap (i.e. A toggle command for the Multiamp may be the same command to switch patches on the RV-500), so having them on different channels will allow you to send MIDI to each separately. The Multiamp on Channel 1 will ignore commands for the RV-500 on Channel 2.

I know MIDI can be a lot to digest, I was in the same place when I took the plunge. Didn't know a thing about MIDI. But the things you can do with it are really cool, and the HXFX is pretty easy to work with. It just takes some time to wrap your head around the commands. It can be a fun rabbit hole to explore once you get it though... I started by just using my HXFX to control a single pedal, and now I'm controlling almost my entire pedalboard with just my iPad.

One thing that’s become very apparent in the short time I’ve had this, is that I shouldn’t have been scared to buy one because of the fear of it being over complicated.

Line 6 did a great job of making these damn easy to use/program, even for people like me who hate this sort of thing.
Yeah, there's still so much I don't know about mine, yet even with what I've figured out so far I get a ton of mileage from it. Related to the recent discussion, I don't think I'll ever use the midi functionality but even without that I feel like I'm getting my money's worth.
