Hey guys, a lot of info here. Gonna do some reading. Would you guys recommend this unit overall for someone who really isn't wanting a pedalboard but has effects at the ready in a small form factor? Been looking into the Tech 21 Flyrig but feel I might get more bang for my buck with this unit.
I would just need the HX effects as I’m very happy with my current rig. Just don’t know a whole lot about what this unit can produce tone wise.
Yeah. I think the HX FX would work good. The most I have had on my pedalboard was: tuner, compressor, OD, fuzz, looper. But now that I play fretless I'd like some chorus and a few other things. I just don't want the hassle of a giant board.
Having had both the HXFX and the Stomp for about a year and a half, you might like the Stomp better, actually. The HXFX was designed more as a pedalboard controller, having an additional FX loop and a pretty in-depth MIDI control section. I have mine set up as the brain of my main pedalboard, in conjunction with a few other favorite pedals. This isn't to say that the HXFX can't do what my other pedals do, it's more "just because I can" with the HXFX. Well, maybe with the exception of synth... IMO, that's the one weak point of the Helixes at the moment, and I've really begun to lean on the C4 with quite a few songs in my main cover band gig.
The Stomp doesn't have the MIDI control of the HXFX, but it
does have amp/preamp/cab simulations in a smaller form factor. I've personally been using IRs instead, but there are some pretty good options in the Stomp's amp/cab sim section. Whether or not you need those is up to you, but they're nice to have in there.
I have used the stomp as a substitute pedalboard for gigs in small spaces. Always on compressor, a couple flavours of OD. No complaints. The choruses sound fine to me but I don’t use them much.
This is very much how I use my Stomp as well... Unless I need my C4, I often take just my Stomp a grab'n'go all-in-one pedalboard that fits in the pocket of my gig bag. Always on Comp, and patches with 10-Band EQ and IR blocks when my band is on IEMs. I do also have
an external dual switch for more switching options. I use Footswitch 4 to change view mode so I can easily change patches, and FS5 as the tuner/mute switch.
HX FX has more effects slots in 1 preset (9), Stomp is physically smaller and has Amp sims (but only 6 slots), and Pod Go has a few order limitations but a built in expression pedal.
Rumor has been circulating that an upcoming update for the Stomp (I think maybe firmware 3.0?) will up the block count to 8 or 9 as well. I'll be interested to see if there will be any DSP limits in the Stomp with that many blocks, but am looking forward to the additional signal chain options.
Essentials that I need to sound good would be OD, chorus and a compressor really. Are the OD tones good? I’m used to SansAmp etc.
I have a Darkglass Symmetry on my HXFX board, but use the Deluxe Comp as an always on block in my Stomp and am quite happy with it. The LA Studio Comp and 3-Band Comp get a good amount of love around Talkbass too, I believe.
Check out that list that Sonicblaze linked to for a full list (Thanks @Sonicblaze!), but as he mentioned, there is indeed a Sansamp model and it's quite good if you like the Sansamp sound. There are also a lot of other
really good dirt models in the Helixes. My personal fav is the Teemah. Nicely touch sensitive, and a wide array of overdrive available. A light gain setting with some high cut and it sounds KILLER with a Pbass. The new Alpaca model is great as well. Similar to the Teemah in flavor, but with more drive available. The Obsidian is also good for the Darkglass B7K sound, and the Triangle Fuzz is a pretty great Muff model. And if you
really need to cut through with fuzz.... check out the new Legendary Drive, modeled after Steve Vai's Carvin VLD1.
I posted a Legendary vs Brown Acid comparison a while back if you're interested. I don't ever get that wild with dirt on an actual gig, but I really like the sound.
Lots of good everything in the Helix, and chorus is no exception. My fav is the Dimension model by far, but the 70's Chorus, Trinity Chorus and Analog Chorus are quite good as well.
I know this will sound a little gushy, but seriously... There are some effects in there that I'd never personally use, but there's not anything in the Helix models that sounds "bad." Line 6 really did (does) their homework with Helix models.
