Line 6 HX Effects

I added the last piece to my hx board yesterday - the cabM. My word this thing is incredible.

I've got foundation patches for each of the dr tone lab onboard preamps (sadowsky, audere, nordstrand, darkglass) and then build upon them depending on what i want.

Dare I say, this is the happiest I've ever been with my rig. All centered around the hxfx.View attachment 3924979

Love this!! This was the direction I was thinking of going when I got my stomp. With the cabM. Or something in that same realm with captor. But then a lot of things changed and I just didn’t. Way cool setup though. Always thought it would be nice to have that in a compact board where you could drop it on the floor in any scenario and it’ll perform and or do and sound exactly how you want it to. Regardless of the hardware/software rec your rig. Cab n amp or not. So cool imo.

Apologies for the side-track, but another SY-1 fan here! What settings have you got yours on that you are particularly diggin'?

Sorry, totally missed this comment back then. I really like a lot of the bass sounds in the 6-10 variations. I haven’t used it whole lot since I got it. I just haven’t been playing with bands in a while. Hopefully that’ll change soon. But it’s got a lot of cool sounds in it. I do seem to gravitate towards the bass stuff though.

nice! What's the expression/volume pedal?

I am absolutely loving the hxfx/cabM combo. I was playing with it, then turned it off to A/B my previous tone with my new one and its a night and day difference. Highly recommend with the HX series.

Further HX Bass Octaver / OC2 comparison and My Crazy OC2 theory (aka Another Mid-day Brain Dump)
Okay, so I spent quite a bit more time last night focusing on my patch to make the HX Bass Octaver sound like an OC2. It has five blocks so far and is getting reasonably close (Bass Octaver > Dimension > Minotaur > Parametric EQ > Deluxe Comp). I still want to tweak on the EQ, but I just don't think any more trickery will get the HX to truly sound like an OC2. No real surprise of course, but I've already gotten it closer than I thought I would.

I formulated a theory as I was really getting into the weeds with it last night, which could possibly be of interest to @Digital Igloo if the Line 6 team ever does model the hallowed octaver. *crossing fingers lol

After revisiting the OC2 so much over the last week(ish), I'm now of the opinion that the key to the synthy-ness of the OC2 is that it's not actually an "octaver." *gasp!

My theory is that the OC2 is actually an analog synth module (programmed for one sound only, with a dry blend) in an octaver shell. Much like how a keyboard MIDI controller controls a synth module, I think the Boss takes the dry bass signal as the input, and actually generates the -1/-2 sound from within itself, as opposed to taking the original bass sound and pitch shifting it down. When really dissecting/comparing, it struck me a little after midnight that the OC2's -1 sound compares more to sounds I hear from actual synths. It compares more directly to my Future Impact than my other octavers. (But I haven't had a chance to directly A/B the OC2 and FI side by side yet.)

Maybe others have already figured this out, I was a little late to the OC2 party in my bass playing career. ha ha!

I'm going to keep working on my HX OC2 patch just for kicks, but I don't think any amount of EQing will get me there. The current synths in the HX don't really do what the OC2 does either. So, the best answer for now is to keep an OC2 or my Octabvre in the FX Loop.

On that note: @Chace90 had an interesting suggestion today too... Use just the -1 of the OC2 in the loop, and assign an expression pedal to control the FX Loop mix. Then you can control the mix of the dry vs. sub with your foot! Handy! (disclaimer: neither of us have actually tried this yet. We're just assuming you can do it since you can assign an exp to everything else in the HX... ha ha)

5sg.
Reviving an old post from the thread....5sg, you have any tweaks to this baby? :hyper:

Just did a rewire of my HXFX board the other day, of both the power and other stuff underneath -

and a slight change to the signal path, so I always have a dry out from the bass straight through the left XLR out of the JDI Stereo d.i. To record or send to F.O.H.

Some of you guys might find this interesting (or not). But I did a test of recording both the DRY XLR out from the bass and the WET XLR out from the HXFX at the same time, direct to my audio interface/D.A.W..
To check the HXFX audio to digital to audio conversion latency differences as compared to the Dry signal.

What I found was the Wet going though the HXFX with the IR/cab block on, and both fx loops bypassed, was about 1 to 2 milliseconds max, later than the Dry.

And each fx loop of the HXFX added about 1ms each to the latency.
(Checking with each fx loop on separately, then both on at the same time).

So the HXFX, with both loops off, about 1 to 2 ms max.
And with both loops on, about 3 to 4 ms max.
Those are some pretty good numbers if correct.

Flipping the polarity switch on and off on one of the two recorded tracks, it sounds to me like they are definitely more in phase than not.

If anyone is interested and has the means, could you double check these findings with your HXFX and D.A.W.? :)

Beautiful board! That wiring is pristine

I don't have the means, but I have also wondered this. My board is all digital at the moment because I love the flexibility, but that also means it is going through about 5 different ADA conversions before it hits my amp or computer. I just tell myself it keeps me from rushing.

When I was using the TC G-System with a digital dirt in the loop, the whole AD/DA conversion came to about 10ms which then was too much.

Very interesting that the latency depends on what is active. On one side I think it's good that it always keeps it as quick as possible, but when you are using two signals as I do, this can be a bit problematic.

In fact, with my Helix rack I might have a similar problem.

Hm... that is actually a really huge AD/DA chain...

To be honest - for me that would result in too much. No matter how good these devices are, but this is too much. However, it will be significantly less when not all devices are used, not all loops are on.

With a chain that long, a fully digital setup might make sense. Our industry is too small for a real digital connection in between pedals.

I use my HX Stomp as my interface so I can't get a true reading of my latency. My chain is:

C4>Aftershock>HXFX>HX Stomp

Loop1> H9
Loop2> Iron Lung

I'm really curious now, because all of these pedals have to make a difference. Not necessarily bad, because my dry tone is boring lol.

I guess what really matters is if you can feel it, or it messes with you while playing.
I think different people have lower/higher tolerances to how much latency they can deal with while playing.
If it doesn't bother you, then it's all good.

I was just testing my board out of curiosity, not to make anyone second guess their setup.

Saw someone suggest using the Ashvillepattrn as a drive. It sounds so freaking good!

This is how I'm using it: View attachment 3938510

Glad to see someone else is doing this! I just posted about it in the HX Stomp thread the other day and my settings are pretty close. The drive full up really does fulfill my mild drive needs and the filters excellent for fine tuning the sound, but my settings aren’t far off from yours!

Its surprisingly responsive to playing dynamics too. Stacks super well with a heavier darkglass AOU overdrive too.

It looks pretty bad on paper, but it feels good and sounds good to me. The only time I really notice it is certain algos on the H9 when blended. Theres a slight phase issue that pops up depending on the other effects. I enjoy the problem solving aspect of building tones and I wouldn't want to sacrifice flexibility for simpler tones.

All that said, a Helix Rack with a couple of pedals in a drawer in a loop looks really tempting if I decide to overhaul my rig.

I used an M5/M9/M13 for years for synth and the latency was so significant that it DID affect my playing when the effects were engaged. I might just be so smitten with the tracking of the C4 that I don't notice or am already adjusting for latency in other areas of the signal chain.

It doesn't bother me, so it's all good.
