Line 6 HX Stomp

The power requirements for the HX Stomp appear to be 9V @ 3A, which is not possible for typical ISO power bricks.

Does anyone know if it could operate @ 2A for example and that the 3A is simply an overstatement?

Assuming that 3A is definitely a requirement, does anyone have a picture of the included power supply so that I could gauge if it would fit suspended under my existing pedal board?

Cheers!

While I can't tell you if the requirements are mandatory, it's the same power requirements as the HXFX.

To be safe, if you're loading up the DSP, I'd aim to supply what it needs. I've been using a GigRig Generator to power my HXFX and it's been rock solid.

I'm strongly considering moving from HXFX to Stomp. I don't need all the I/O that the FX provides and the added benefit of integrated headphone/practice amp along with amp modeling is really jumping out at me. The smaller form factor of Stomp vs. FX is icing on the cake.

I will have to see if I can accomplish what I am already getting tonewise with 6 blocks instead of 9 though. Pretty sure I can as I dont run anything too complex.

I love my HXFX so far so this really has my wallet going crazy!

Size comparison vs HX Effects (his hand is blocking one of the Stomp’s footswitches but you get the idea):

And it looks like the Stomp will be iOS compatible with a Camera Connection Kit! Amazing news!

I know, they seem like they really killed it with the Stomp. I gotta hand to them once again. I am as impressed with the Stomp as I am with the HX….still wish there was some added features to the HX that are in the Stomp. It just makes sense to add them. Not from a business standpoint of course. I get it. But it still sucks.

I don't have ANY Helix yet, but trying to justify the cost of the big guy...
Does anyone know (or is there a list of) how many presets use more than 6 blocks?
That would be a good metric...

Diego

How many pedals do you use currently and do you want this to replace your pedalboard or be a part of it? For me, I’d buy this if it had only one block.

I have ultimately mixed both. The drives in the HX are good. Actually, no, they're great. The B7K emulation was so good that my best friend and I agreed we couldn't tell the difference in an A/B test. Enough that I sold my long-suffering B7K and I haven't missed it. But yeah there's nothing in the box like an AOU, and probably not even a Hyper Luminal without some serious tweaking.

That being said, I ditched all other pedals without an issue - even to the point that my analog octaver is looking like it'll leave the board too.

I actually got pretty close to my Alpha Omega by combining a HiWatt amp (Alpha) and Fuzz Face (Omega) in parallel, but the amps were always missing from the HX Effects. I’m therefore now jonesing for a HX Stomp to replace pretty much everything I need!

For nearly 10 years, my gigging rigs have been based on amp/cab modeling technology.

As an enthusiast who has used and owned many a modeler, I say with unmatched enthusiasm that Line 6 has finally nailed it for me with the HX Stomp. Absolutely all boxes checked!

The form factor, I/O and DSP present in this unit (one nation under Yamaha along with Ampeg) are above and beyond my expectations.

Line 6 has both bassists and guitarists unified and fully-covered with the future now very wide open.

All aboard!

Could you clarify for me how the Stomp is able to do two independent mono FX loops? I can't quite work it out based on the I/O on the unit, and the manual isn't quite clear either...
You'll need a Y cable for the send, but in the Send/Return > Mono subcategory, you can choose the Left and Right Sends, Returns, and FX Loops independently.

In practice, it's closer to 2A, but it may work with even less. Expect to double up some outputs and note you'll likely need an adapter cable, as HX Stomp has the same larger DC In pin as HX Effects.

Believe it or not, HX Stomp has higher requirements than HX Effects. The additional circuitry and color screen collectively pulls more than all six scribble strips. We had to remove a couple of third-party power supplies from the approved list for the new kid.

We're hoping to add more approved third-party power supplies as we get them in and tested. Right now, the Strymon Zuma and Ojai work really well (again, doubled up with pin adapters).

So right now, I am running an HXFX primarily from a single preset (9 blocks).

I have a strategy in order to move to the Stomp, but, HX and Helix experts check my logic.

So currently, I run a Compressor then a Split A/B to two paths. Top path is simply an overdrive (KWB) that remains footswitcheable.

The bottom bath (B) that is turned on via Split A/B is a Delay and Reverb. I use this path for ambient swells with a volume pedal. Very rarely do I use this effect, but, it is there when needed (I play in a worship band).

Path B then rejoins path A. After this "rejoin" I have the Bass Octaver and then the Obsidian 7K for general EQ stuff. Then, an IR block with a cab simulator and finally a Noise Gate. The Noise Gate I dont really need because we have one at the board, but, my G&L SB-2 does get a little noisy from the bridge pickup at times so....

Ok, so, the only thing that is on/off via footswitch in this preset is the KWB overdrive, the A/B (which turns on the delay + reverb that are 'always on'), and the Bass Octaver. The compressor, Obsidian 7k, IR, and Gate are always on.

If I wanted to replicate something similar on the Stomp, this would be my strategy. Operate from the "Preset mode." Have one Preset (footswitch) be my Delay/Reverb combo (up to 6 blocks), one Preset (footswitch) be my overdrive (up to 6 blocks), and the third Preset (footswitch) be my standard clean tone (up to 6 blocks).

Would this work? Thoughts?

Ordered one of these, going to power this like I do my HXFX: Gigrig generator > distributor> one cable to the appropriate adapter, with isolators for any other pedals integrated into the board. everything can be mounted under the board, everything is isolated, neat and tidy with custom length power cables.

Anyway you could post a pic or diagram on how the Gigrig Generator works with distributor for both the HXFX (or Stomp) and your other pedals? This might be ideal for me. I plan on only powering the HXFX (or Stomp), a Shure GLXD16 (wireless receiver), and an MXR M81 Bass Preamp.

Im currently running the HXFX off of the factory power supply and the MXR/Shure off of a supplemental power supply. Would love to power all three from a single source instead.

This is an old, messy first attempt. Most of the pedals didn't need to be, and werent isolated, but it shows the general idea. When I'm at the practice space next I can take a picture of my current board. the generator is on the bottom right, it feeds a primary distributor (top center) 4 cables go to power the demon, cat tail, dd500, and the grey stache. A fifth cable goes from the distributor to the isolator (top left)that feeds the tuner, POG, phase 90, and afterlife. the distributor is a glorified daisy chain on it's own, but there are specific "high current" isolated adapters for various purposes.for example there's and "evenflo" adapter made for the Eventide factor series that allocates the required current, and the correct plug. there isn't an HX adapter but if you use isolators or other high current adapters to account for your other pedals, you can get away with using a simple 2.1mm to 2.5mm adapter coming from a cable connected to the first distributor in the chain.
