Line 6 HX Stomp

Yes. Here’s what my tuner display looks like. It indicates every note as E despite tuning correctly.

I have no idea what the yellow caution triangle is for.
An old post from another forum suggested a similar problem from a possible update error. I would suggest either a re-update/re-install or if you haven't updated yet, maybe try an update to the latest firmware.

I actually like putting the lows through distortion/overdrive and mixing with the clean highs. Reference my previous posts (a while ago) about the Teemah! on the lows. It puts some texture on the bones without making higher notes too gritty.

Line 6 HX Stomp

That works really good. I've been using the Teemah for my clean tone with awesome results. Now I'm experimenting with the Retro Reel so I can have the split for other applications

Does anyone know whether it is possible to get the tones from the Tech21 VT Bass DI on the Stomp?

I really love the tone of my VT Bass 500 amp more than anything I can find on my Stomp, but I don't want to bring the amp to gigs as I always plug straight into the house DI. I also don't want to get the VT Bass DI as I have a very minimalistic setup (just the Stomp) and don't want to carry another pedal!

Not sure about the VT Bass DI. There's a Sansamp Bass Driver model in there, but I don't know how close that is to the VT Bass DI in real life?

I am not a fan of the bass driver model on the Stomp. But maybe others are. I far prefer the sound of the actual Ampeg amp sims on the Stomp. I’m not sure how close it is to the VT bass sound, but go on the line 6 custom tone site and search for my presets that I uploaded. Same username. There is an SVT clean and an SVT drive on there, either of which might get you in the right ballpark. I use an Ampeg 8x10 IR from the shift line pack for best results. #12, I believe. Sometimes #7, I think it is, for drivier tones.

Im not a fan of the sansamp in the Stomp, but to be fair it isn't modelled after the VT DI.

Thanks, I'll have a search for it. I've got all the Ownhammer IR's but I feel they just muddy up the sound. I'll fiddle around with the Ampeg settings again. The VT Bass 500 has this fantastic 'bite' button that just sounds so good.

Well, if you like "bitey," you may not like my presets. I'm more after "vintage warm and fuzzy." But there are ways to do "bitey" in there too, I'm sure. I typically run an SVT4 Pro with the ultra low and ultra high engaged into another head. Unorthodox, but it works for me. You could always run that into a Woody Blue or the Sunn head, which is my main tone. You might like that preset better, which is also in there. You can dial up the highs a bit more than I typically do.

But as I have often found, one man's trash is another man's potpourri. Nothing personal if you think my presets sound like hot garbage.

I had the vt a long time ago and I seem to remember one knob that turned all the way down produced B15 type tones, then progressed to more like SVT tones as you turned it up, until it started sounding like overdriven SVT sounds, so I would think the B15 model in the Stomp would give you that part, and the SVT amps would give you the other part of what the VT does.

Yeah that was the character knob. I can't seem to replicate it on the Stomp...

Tech21 VT-Bass - where's the magic ? Found this thread where somebody plotted the response from the pedal at different settings. The character knob works on the mids and adds harmonics apparently.

Tech21 SansAmp VT Bass – technical review Also from this thread: "Believe it or not, Mid and Character are almost the same control. Frequency wise there are some differences: Mid boost is set to 865Hz, Character boost is 1462Hz but Character and Mid cut overlap perfectly: 880Hz.

So why do they operate differently? The reason is the position in the circuit. Character is before distortion, the low/mid/high controls are after distortion.

It is a simple but very effective solution probably inherited directly from the SansAmp Classic. In practical terms the Character knob pushes the saturation forward (or backward) on the midrange. Because the mid control is tuned in the same area, the tone effects of the Character control can be compensated post-distortion if the mids are too strong.

The drawback is that the Character control can generate a lot of noise if turned up above a certain level."

So apparently to replicate the character knob you'd want to add an EQ block centered at 1 kHz and play around with level and Q values before the amps in Helix.

Looking at the plots from the character knob sweep it seems like the knob at 9 o'clock has a spike around the 1462 Hz mentioned above. As you sweep to 11 o'clock the peak is lower than at 9 o'clock by -10 dBu and at 12 o'clock it drops -21 dBu below the 9 o'clock position but there's a spike at around 2.5 kHz of 13 dB.

So from my understanding of those threads a wide Q or maybe even a shelf at around 1 kHz to dial back the high mids before the B15 preamp could get you in the ballpark maybe? Or a cut around 2.5 kHz.

Maybe somebody else can chime in with how they understand those graphs because I'm pretty sure it could be replicated.

Paging @JKos since he did a wonderful job with the Noble DI in this thread a while ago.

Awesome I'll try that, thanks!

Yeah that was the character knob. I can't seem to replicate it on the Stomp...

"The character knob is essentially a midrange control that sweeps through Ampeg-land, while also affecting the attack and drive response. At fully counter-clockwise, the mid scoop is very SVT-like, and rotating clockwise adds more midrange content. Set at 12 o’clock, the pedal is said to emulate the B-15 fliptop—the tone does transform at that point in the rotation, and yeah, it’s pretty darn close. As you roll above 12 o’clock with the character knob, the pedal develops a gnarly growl that maxes into a dUg Pinnick-like snarl."

I don't know that you're going to replicate the knob, but depending how you have the VT set, you may be able to use the stomp (either B15 or SVT emulation, depending) to get that sound. This is kind of what I was saying before. If you have the VT set to sound like a SVT, use the SVT model, or if it is set to sound like a B15, use that model.

If you have to have the knob, maybe you could have parallel paths, put the B15 on one and the SVT on the other, then mix between them (which would be the character knob), but I can't imagine that would work, but maybe if the settings on the B15 and SVT were correct? I doubt it.

Anyone have a bass synth patch similar to Stevie Wonder’s Isn’t She Lovely or some tips on how to get there?

I haven’t gotten anywhere mucking with the various filters, etc.

That's interesting. What a bassline, holy cow, I never listened closely before. He used a RMI 368 Electric for the epiano, so I thought maybe that was what the bass was played on, but no. I can't find what synth he used. What's weird is it sounds like a bass with flats, pretty much, except that timing, attack, note transitions etc. are going to sound different when played on keyboard, which obviously can't be done on bass. The song that played afterward on Spotify was "more than a woman". I think it was an actual bass, but had pretty similar tone, in a way, which makes me think the sound has more to do with it being played on keys (than the tone, per se). Stevie's sound might be a little more rubbery or bouncy, I guess, but is that the tone or the way it's played? Idk.
