Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with this unit.
I am close to buying it as I really just need a single effect here and there. What I was wondering is, besides the tuner and octaver, what other effect models does the M5 have that would make this useful to a bassist?

I have reviewed the effects models it has I just don’t know how many would be useful .

It does look like it would be a lot of fun to have!

No idea what would be useful to you personally, some people love ring modulators and I hate them. One pedal will cover chorus, flanger and phaser so your modulation needs are filled. There are synth effects that could be useful for certain songs. I don't really touch the reverbs, but they could prove useful if you were doing some kind of solo thing. The pedal does octave up if you want to sound like you're playing an 8 string / doubled bass. Various distortions and overdrives, but there is no blend control so some may be less useful for bass. The unit has enough capabilities that you're only real limitation is your imagination.

Just ordered my M5 last night on eBay "buy it now". $175. With a George L. 12 inch patch cable.

Mainly bought it for the bass octave and pitch glide. If I happen to like any of the other 100 effects that's a bonus

Can you power this pedal with PP2+

You ought to be able to power it with that. It's supposed to run off the standard boss adapter.

I've got one that's arriving today myself (got it from Elderly for $160 with a coupon--sweet deal!). I've already got an M13 for guitar, that I've tried out with the bass, so I'm pretty familiar with the sounds. But the M13 is such overkill for what I do with a bass, plus I've got individual pedals that can do things the M13 can't, so the M5 ought to be ideal. Plus, to fund it, I just sold a Leeds and a Pitchblack, both of which it replaces nicely.

Stoked, I am.

My PP2 would not power it. There is supposed to be a current doubler cable sold by Voodoo Lab that lets you use two 9V ports to give enough current to power the M5. No personal experience with this, only that the PP2 didn't power the unit.

Says it takes 500 mA but that's only for boot up I imagine if you put it on 250 when no other pedals turned on it might work. I have. A powerstrip I'm going to zip tie under my board anyway so I can one spot off that

but..when you say "the pedal does octave up" you mean the Octave Fuzz effect, i.e: fuzz + oct+1? as far as i know the pedal can't do a clean octave up effect. am i wrong?

I hate to say "you're wrong" as it sounds rude, but you're wrong. Heh. Using the pitch glide effect you can do a clean octave up or even two octaves up and blend it with the original signal. I do that for a 8 string effect. I've used the two octaves up effect run into distortion, dimension and delay to make an acceptable lead guitar effect.

anyway i'm going to buy the m5 in the next few days i think. i think i'll use it mainly for the modulation stuffs and some synth sounds

I didn't notice anything wrong with your English, it's fine. Add a few typos and bad spelling and you'll look like a native speaker. ;-)

Sounds like this pedal might be just the ticket for me---I don't need a lot of effects, but could really use a decent chorus, octave, and something along the lines of an EBS BassIQ (or similar). If this one pedal will do these sounds decent for bass, it might be just what the doctor ordered for my needs.

The analog chorus and Dimension models are nice. The octave is incredible. The tron's take some work for bass, but they're not terrible. Not as good as the Proton, but then it has a lot of versatility. I guess I still owe some videos. I went through a "screw all effects" phase last week that only lasted a few days, but that sidetracked me.
