So, with the popularity of the m5, m9, etc are the big stompbox modelers still relevant? There is a modulation modeler I think I could trade some unused stuff for locally but am I going to be picking up a dinosaur or is there still some benefit to the stand alone unit?

Depends on the price. You can get an m5 pretty cheap.
