Line 6 Relay G10, short review

Here's a puzzle for you guys: I just picked up a Godin fretless A4 from another TBer earlier this week. Great bass, has dual inputs, one for the magnetic and one for the peizo pups. The G10 works fine in the Magnetic input but doesnt work in the piezo one.

If I put a 1/4" splitter in the piezo jack and plug the Line 6 into that, it works fine. I unscrewed the the jack plate to see if there was a contact issue but it's a sealed jack mounted to a printed board. Any thoughts about how I might further trouble shoot this weirdness?

Just got one myself. Price was hard to beat for what you get, and I've been looking for something like this for a while.

I don't like the USB power, but I'm glad that I can use a USB battery for it. I'll need to get one. Wish it took a standard 9V from a pedal board.
I haven't used a wireless in a while. The last ones I had were the AKG Guitar Bug that I borrowed, and the X2. The g10 is like a nice mix of the two, minus the downsides of them. This doesn't compress to my ears the way the Guitar Bug did, but I liked the small receiver that attaches to the jack. I loved the sound of the X2, but didn't like the transmitter pack. The sound is pretty clear to me, and it doesn't sound compressed at all. There might be a little loss of top end, but I didn't really notice. But, what I did notice that for guitar it really maintained the touch sensitivity of the tube amplifier. I'm going to try it with bass overdrive this weekend and see how it fares in that department on bass.

After receiving it, I did wish that the form factor of the receiver base was more pedal board friendly. It's also a little bulky for stashing in a gig bag, cable could be longer, and the plug is a wall wart. If they could have made it a standard pedal size and 9V, it would be perfect. If ditching the XLR would make it more compact, I'd be all for it.

Anyway, I love it for what it is: an economical, yet quality option, that's simple and easy to use.
 
Hey RoadRanger, how do those cheaparse Chinese system work for you? I like your DIY idea of beefing up the receiver power supply. How is the tone quality, range and delay?

I have a cheaparse Chinese transmitter/plug that's like that. I bought a TS male to TS female cord to use with weird instrument jacks - and maybe to use anyways as the body is kinda large and I'm afaid of bumping into something and breaking the plug off :( . Unfortunately I couldn't find one under 6 feet cheaply but I'll probably just coil it up, stick the transmitter in a pocket or gaff it to the strap:

BTW only used once so far, generic alkalines in the transmitter went dead just as the last song ended even though I shut it off during breaks. That caused a low level squeal that wasn't too obnoxious - always good to know what your wireless will do when it runs out :) . Next time I'll get Rayovacs. The receiver batteries are still fine, maybe get 2+ gigs out of those but I'll eventually hook a wallwart into it or try to run it from 9V with a regulator chip?

I haven't used it much but tone and delay haven't been an issue for me. Range seems OK for stage use or even out into the dance floor, acoustic delay would kill you out farther then that - it's not like being a guitard where you don't really care about being in time with the rest of the band :facepalm:.

Generally the G10 sounded good, but when I A/B'd with a cord I did notice it lost a bit of clarity and some volume. The sound via the G10 sounded a little softer than with a chord. That is the best way I can describe it.
I got one a couple of weeks ago and I agree - it sounds "softer." I read that it has Line 6's stupid "Cable Tone" built in.

Is there any way to defeat it?

If there's no way to defeat it, I'm sending mine back.

Anyone know if this item from Temple Audio would allow you to power the base station from a typical pedalboard power supply?

Given that it converts 9v to 5v USB, it sure sems like it would work. This might be a game changer for a few of us (myself included) who have been holding it until a good pedalboard solution came along that didn't include mounting a power strip under the board. It is a bit expensive, though.

I solved mine this way:

  • Sound - Darkglass
  • Freedom - Line 6 wireless & batteries
  • Simplicity - Pedaltrian Nano & Pitchblack
  • Compact - EBS patch cables

Additionally I got to use me and my friends pedalboard brackets to fasten the Relay 10 on the board, without having to attach Velcro to the Relay 10 itself.

The Pedaltrain battery is for the pedals and the USB battery is for the Relay 10. It should have plenty of power for a practice session or a gig. I'll try it for real next Sunday at practice.

I was able to quite easily solve the recessed jack issue, at least on my Ibanez SRF-700 fretless. The output jacks on these instruments are easily long enough they can be extended with a spacer. I simply removed the jack, ran the nut to the end of the treads, stuck it back in, secured it with a second nut. Re-soldered the leads, it looks perfectly fine, and now works great with either the cable or G10 transmitter. I assume many Ibanez instruments with recessed jacks are similar.

And for those lamenting the USB power with their pedal board, I ran an experiment with my SKB powered board using a regular cheap USB car adapter. Apparently, even though it's a 12 volt adapter, many regulators will tolerate an input voltage as low as 6 or 7 volts and still give you 5. Mine put out a nice clean 5.1 volts DC with just 9 DC volts coming in from the pedal board. Obviously, I can't swear by every single one on the market, but the tiny one I picked up at Harbor Freight did the trick. Heat is not an issue since there is less voltage being dissipated than the design actually calls for.
